Teenager who fell pregnant despite taking the Pill ‘every day’ reveals it was a ‘massive shock’ and says trolls have accused her of ‘trapping’ her boyfriend

A teenager who fell pregnant while on the pill has said ‘it was the best thing that ever happened’ despite receiving abuse from online trolls.

Evangeline Adesile, now 20, from Manchester, said it was a ‘massive shock’ to learn she was pregnant when she was 19 and taking the combined contraceptive pill on a regular cycle of 21 days followed by a week-long break. 

Having only been with her boyfriend, James Coghlan, 19, for six months at the time, Evangeline revealed she faced online abuse from trolls for her decision to become a teen mum.

She explained:  ‘A lot of boys also commented saying it was my choice to keep the baby, not James’, and that I had trapped him which really annoyed me – it’s a two way thing.’

The young mother learned she was pregnant in December 2019, and now says her daughter Baby Elaia is the best thing to ever happen to her 

The young mum discovered she was pregnant in December 2019 after leaving college that summer – with her unexpected pregnancy putting an end to her plans to go to university.

She realised the pill had failed, despite being 99.9 percent effective, when she missed her period on one of the breaks. 

Evangeline said: ‘I was meant to be going to uni to do fashion marketing and I had already got a place at Chester Uni on the same course as my friend.

‘I was quite disappointed when I first found out that I was pregnant and that I wouldn’t be able to go.’

Evangeline revealed she was initially nervous about telling her boyfriend James Coghlan, 19, whom she had only been with for six months (pictured together) 

But the couple have now been together for two years and have just bought and renovated their first home together 

Evangeline continued: ‘It was a massive shock. A lot of people said I must not have taken the pill properly but I know I definitely did and never missed a day.

‘I was scared at first – my main concern was that I hadn’t been with James for that long but we came to the mutual decision we would make it work.’

Evangeline said she was gutted not to be able to attend college to pursue her dream of fashion marketing, revealing:  ‘Elaïa was due when I was meant to start so it just wouldn’t have worked, but as I got further into my pregnancy I knew I wanted to be at home with the baby.’ 

However she faced further challenges after strangers began sending her online abuse about keeping the baby.

Elaia said despite her fears about telling James about the pregnancy, the couple made the decision to ‘make it work’ (pictured together at Elaia’s baby shower) 

Evangeline revealed: ‘A lot of people commented online saying we were too young to be able to provide and I’m setting myself up for a bad life. 

‘It feels good to have proved them wrong.’

The couple have now been together for almost two years and are due to move into their first home together with baby Elaïa, seven months, in May.

The young mother has also started her own successful business selling baby clothes, called Mama and Laï, with her daughter as the face of the brand.

She is even planning to launch a homemade skin care range for mums and babies using organic products.

Evangeline said: ‘I’ve always wanted my own business but never knew what I wanted to do, then Elaïa came along and she was the inspiration for it.

‘Everyone wants the best products for their babies and I want to make natural products that will help people.

‘I asked for baby models of different ages for the website and was overwhelmed with the response – I really didn’t expect the amount of people to apply that did.

Evangeline said she had always wanted to start her own business and said her daughter has been the inspiration behind it

The young mother said she had received ‘lots of support’ on social media as she launched her business so she had ‘high hopes’ about what she could achieve

‘I’ve had lots of support and shares on my Instagram and TikTok as well so I have high hopes for how the latest launch will go.’

She said: ‘An account on TikTok called something like ‘end teen pregnancy’ shared my videos saying teen mums are bad parents.

She said any ‘nasty comments’ she receives on social media ‘make her work even harder’ for her daughter (pictured) 

‘They said I wasn’t thinking about the baby because I wouldn’t be able to give her everything I could if I was older.

‘But now we’ve bought and renovated our home which we’re moving into next month and my business is taking off so it’s not taken long to prove them wrong.

‘The nasty comments just made us work even harder for our little girl.’

How effective is the contraceptive pill? 

The combined pill contains artificial versions of female hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

When taken correctly, it is more than 99 per cent effective at preventing pregnancy, meaning fewer than 1 in 100 who use it as contraception will get pregnant in 1 year.

People are advised they need to take it around the same time every day as you could get pregnant if you do not do this.

Pregnancy could also occur if you miss a pill, or vomit, or have severe diarrhoea while some medications may make it less effective.

The standard way to take the pill is to take one every day for 21 days and then have a break for seven days, during which you have a bleed like a period, and then start again.

Some types of pill with no or shorter breaks (a tailored regime) which may reduce some side effects.

The pill prevents pregnancy by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg each month.

It also thickens the mucus in the neck of the womb, so it is harder for sperm to penetrate the womb and reach an egg, and thins the lining of the womb so there is less chance of a fertilised egg implanting into the womb and being able to grow.

There are other methods of contraception which are better are preventing pregnancy, such as the intrauterine device (IUD), intrauterine system (IUS), the injection and the implant.
