My husband got a pay rise but I still pay the bills as he won't split in half
09/11/2021DEAR DEIDRE: I WAS relieved when my husband got a promotion and pay rise as I’ve been paying most of the bills since we’ve been together.
I’m 42, he’s 41 and we have been married for nine years.

I didn’t mind before, as I earned more than him.
But now we are on similar wages I was expecting him to pay closer to half.
When I ask him to split everything, he doesn’t respond.
And when he occasionally has to pay for a big food shop, he gets in a strop for days.
Apart from this one issue with money, I think we have a good relationship.

DEIDRE SAYS: It does sound very one-sided. In a quiet moment, talk to him and explain how this makes you feel. Now your earnings are similar it is only fair you both pay your fair share.
Can you set up a joint account where you both pay the same amount to cover bills and essentials? Then any extra funds can remain in your separate accounts for you to spend as you wish.
