Steph McGovern used the popular term as she gave fans an insight into her trip to Ballycastle in Northern Ireland last week. Little did the presenter know that her statement would cause backlash, which she has now addressed on Twitter.

Staycation refers to a holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.

Many of the presenter’s 414,000 followers responded to her post, with many commenting on her use of the word.

One commented: “Travelling anywhere especially to another island is most definitely a holiday. I adore Steph but it’s not a staycation.”

Hitting back, the 39-year-old wrote: “Isn’t a staycation not travelling abroad?

“I just meant I was having a holiday in the UK!”

Following further backlash, the mother-of-one said she will no longer be using the term.

She commented: “I will never use the word ‘staycation’ again.

“Of all the things I’ve said in the last 15 years, this seems to be the most controversial,” followed by crying with laughter emojis.

Steph went on to point out the contrast between the reaction she had received from Instagram and Twitter users.

The Steph’s Packed Lunch host wrote: “The difference between Twitter and Instagram. Post a pic of your hol in the UK and innocently call it a staycation:

“Twitter: “It’s not a Staycation FFS it’s a vacation FFS. I AM SO MAD AT YOU FOR CALLING IT A STAYCATION. Instagram: Ah brilliant, have a nice time.”(sic)

The presenter is currently away from her hosting duties to enjoy the summer with family.

Yesterday, she shared a picture of two glasses of wine, which she enjoyed with her partner.

In view of her 41,000 followers, she wrote: “Toddler asleep = drinking wine with my missus in the evening sunshine. #happydays.”

Steph has never revealed the identity of her partner, but she is believed to be a television executive.

The couple welcomed their first child together back in November 2019.
