Three months of rain to lash Britain in warm but wet autumn

Britain will be hit by nearly three months of rain as 'warm but wet' autumn weather conditions begin to bite.

Gales and torrential rain are expected throughout September – but not after the heatwave returns for one final hurrah.

Brits will enjoy dry and frequent sunny spells today as the mercury hits highs of 26C in the south.

But occasional thunderstorms and heavy showers will continue to ravage the northern part of the country following yesterday's yellow weather warning for rain.

As we approach autumn, the mercury will drop to the mid teens and low 20s.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna told The Sun we could expect a warm but wet autumn: "For the next three months, we can expect above average temperatures.

"But those will be accompanied with wet weather, and it's set to be wetter than normal going into October.

"There's a 60 per cent chance of this autumn being in the warmest category.

"However, we're set to a lot of rain in September mixed in with some wind."

But for today, the daily showers will make their way south-eastwards.

Temperatures across the north and the west of the UK will be around 14C to 16C; whereas the southeast it will be around 20C to 21C
