‘Shocked’ family told to keep kids quiet by pub staff as ‘diners were leaving’

A "gobsmacked" mum has hit out at a pub for "publicly shaming" her sister when staff ordered them to keep their kids quiet as fellow diners were leaving due to the noise.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, was just about to dig into her meal along with her sister and their three children at The Treebridge Hotel in Nunsthorpe, Teesside, when they were approached by staff.

She said there were complaints about the noise despite the kids playing on their iPads, TeesideLive reports.

Taking to Facebook to complain, the woman said: "A member of staff approached my sister in front of lots of people to let us know an older couple had left because of us and the children were making too much noise and could we keep them quiet!

"Bearing in mind they were quiet on their iPads!"

She added: "This was aimed at my niece who is two! She cried once or twice.

"The manager apologised after I complained and saw my sister embarrassed and in tears over being publicly shamed!

"The girl responsible did not and not one gesture was offered and our experience ruined!"

The restaurant replied on Facebook, claiming the action was necessary and a couple had already left due to the racket.

It said: "I am sorry you feel like this but we need to consider other diners in our restaurant and after several complaints and guests actually leaving I feel that we are more than justified in asking politely."

The note went on: "We had complaints from several customers and had one couple leaving.

"We were not trying to force any shame upon your sister and that is why you were approached discreetly when there was just the two of you rather than at the table which was very near to other diners.

"One of the couple that left does have Alzheimer’s and considers us a safe place for them to come and enjoy a meal which is something that they struggle with.
