My fiancé has no interest in our wedding plans and wants to do everything on the cheap

07/13/2020

DEAR DEIDRE:  MY fiancé and I had to cancel the wedding we had planned for this month and now we can’t agree on anything about a ceremony next year.

He did virtually nothing to help organise the wedding first time around so I just got on with it and sorted out everything myself.

After having to cancel, we’ve got a refund from the hotel and he wants to put that towards a deposit on a flat – scaling our wedding right back and having our reception at home.

He makes comments like: “What’s the point of having flowers? They just go in the bin the next day.”

I can see myself in the register office wearing an ordinary frock at this rate.

We’re in our mid-twenties. I love him but he bought me a cheap engagement ring and a budget wedding feels like a marker of how the rest of my life with him will be.

DEIDRE SAYS: Weddings do show up differing values but can be a good lesson in compromising, which is a skill you will both need to get through life together.

I would suggest putting half the refund into savings for a home of your own and do more of the wedding preparations yourselves – but that includes him too.
