The beloved Cambridge children are often in the spotlight as the nation’s fascination grows with them, but Kate and Prince William strive to provide a certain type of childhood for them – just like Kate’s mother-in-law who tragically passed away before they met, Princess Diana.

Princess Diana, the mother of Prince Harry and Prince William, tragically died in August 1997 aged 36. News of the fatal car accident in Paris shocked the world and caused heartbreak for the Royal Family. So how exactly is the Duchess of Cambridge mimicking Diana’s mothering skills?

Members of the Royal Family quickly learn that their lives will be anything but ordinary, after all, most royals are raised surrounded by extreme wealth, privilege and prestige.

But the price they pay for such luxury is that often they will grow up without much privacy or any everyday normality. However, this does not mean that royals do not attempt to live as normal a life as possible.

Princess Diana was renowned for attempting to ensure her children had as normal a childhood as possible.

In the documentary called Diana, Our Mother Her Life and Legacy, Prince William and Prince Harry shared some of the normal moments their mother tried to ensure they experienced as children.

Prince Harry said: “My mother cherished those moments of privacy and being able to be a mother, rather than the Princess of Wales.

“She made the decision that no matter what, despite all of the difficulties of growing up in that limelight and on that stage, she was going to ensure that both of us had as normal childhoods as was possible.”

Elizabeth Notugu, a parenting expert, exclusively told Express.co.uk: “Princess Diana was incredibly maternal when it came to Will and Harry. [She] strived to make her son’s life as normal as possible under their circumstances.

“Kate is taking a similar approach when it comes to raising her children.”

Kate and William have taken inspiration from Diana, Princess of Wales by trying to ensure their children have as normal an upbringing as possible too.

Royal author Katie Nicholl told the Sun previously: “She’s [Kate Middleton] very affectionate and tactile with children – she’s apparently always hugging and kissing George, Charlotte and Louis and filling them with confidence by heaping praise on them.

“But she is also strict, particularly when it comes to limiting screen time, sugar and demonstrating good manners.”

Elizabeth Notugu added: “Kate doesn’t tolerate nonsense from her children and sets rules, chores, and tasks to ensure they grow up with morals and an appreciation for hard work so, in that respect, she is like her mother-in-law.”

As a tight-knit family unit, the Cambridges have been open in the past about striving to provide a “normal” life for their three children.

Prince George is currently unaware that he is third in line to the throne, behind his father Prince William and grandfather Prince Charles, 71.

William explained to the BBC in 2016 why he wanted to protect his son from the revelation: “I love my children in the same way any father does, and I hope George loves me the same any son does to his father. We are very normal in that sense.

“There’ll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in, in the world. But right now it’s just a case of keeping a secure, stable environment around him and showing as much love as I can as a father.”

Previously, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to watch a football match, with the royals being spotted sitting among members of the public.

The children and their parents sat watching in the crowds of Aston Villa fans as the football club went head to head with their opposition.

By comparison, Prince William only attended his first Aston Villa match at the age of 18. He told the BBC his first experience watching Aston Villa was “fantastic”.

He said: “A long time ago at school, I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs.

“All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn’t want to follow the run of the mill teams.

“I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.

“Aston Villa’s always had a great history.”
