How to dress for YOUR shape: Stylist reveals her three secrets for looking great in clothes – and the ONE hack that will make sure you wear flattering cuts

A fashion stylist has revealed her three secrets for dressing for your proportions, and the one trick you need to try to check you’re dressing right for your shape.

Melissa Murgana, from Melbourne, said looking good in clothes is easy when you know how, and it’s more important to think about your proportions than the current fashion trends when it comes to best suiting your body.

‘Forget the trends and stick to what’s going to best suit your shape. Use tactics like clever colour pairings and tucking in to maximum where you want to draw the eye,’ the 40-year-old posted on Instagram.

So what are the three secrets you need to know?

1. Think about your colour pairings

If you’re someone who wants to draw attention to your waist, then Melissa strongly recommends opting for two contrasting colours on top and bottom, like black and white.

‘Wearing two opposing colours really draws the attention to this mid-section,’ the stylist explained.

‘Whereas two complimentary colours really elongates the silhouette.’

If you’re someone with a nipped-in waist and you want people to notice it even more, Melissa recommends wearing black and white or other contrasting colours to highlight the difference.

Tall women will hugely suit wearing an all-in-one colour scheme.

The one hack to make sure you’re dressing right for your shape

* Melissa said the key to dressing well for your shape is to know the length of your torso. Is it short, natural or long-waisted?

* To do this, get two hands and place them ‘gently but firmly’ underneath your bust. See where that second hand falls.

* If the narrowest part of you is less than two-hands width, you’re likely short-waisted, while more than two-hands width means you’re long-waisted. If they line up to where your waist is, you’ve got a well-balanced torso.

2. Tuck your tops

Melissa’s second fashion secret is you should always tuck your tops in rather than letting them hang out.

The reason for this is that this will highlight where you are more narrow.

‘If you leave your top untucked, it cuts you off, doesn’t balance your top and bottom and hits you at your widest part: your hips,’ Melissa demonstrated.

‘A subtle tuck draws the eye here [your waist] as opposed to here [your hips].’


‘If you’re short in the top of your body, Vs are your friend,’ she said. ‘If you’re longer in the body, you’ll want to go for high-waisted pants or skirt and draw the eye across with horizontal stripes, rather than up and down.’

For those lacking in any clear waist definition, the stylist recommends you try and ‘create a mid point for your frame’ with a belt (pictured)

3. Dress for your waistline

Finally, Melissa explained it is vitally important that you dress for your waistline, whether you have a long or short torso or even no clearly visible waist.

‘If you’re short in the top of your body, Vs are your friend,’ she said.

‘Use V necks and vertical lines to lengthen out your top body.

‘If you’re longer in the body, you’ll want to go for high-waisted pants or skirt and draw the eye across with horizontal stripes, rather than up and down.’

For those lacking in any clear waist definition, the stylist recommends you try and ‘create a mid point for your frame’.

You can do this with a belt and/or nipped-in waistline.  

If you do this, you will instantly look more put-together and narrow at the waist.

1. Know your body and focus on what suits your shape and not just what’s trending.

2. Invest in solid and versatile pieces that will work hard in your wardrobe.

3. Don’t underestimate the power of including a pop colour in your accessories. It helps if your wardrobe is full of single, solid or neutral colours. 

4. Make sure you ‘style’ your outfits. There are heaps of hacks to tuck shirts, tees and jeans to make everyday items look more polished.

5. Have a few go-to neutral outfits for every season so when in doubt, you can reach for them.
