A Third 'Mamma Mia!' Movie May Be in the Works

If you're a huge Mamma Mia! fan—or if you just love music, dancing, and a whole lot of ABBA—we're about to make your day. 

Judy Craymer, the producer and mind behind the smash Broadway hit turned Meryl Streep helmed movie series revealed that the story of  isn't quite over. Why? Because Mamma Mia!, also starring Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, and Cher, was always meant to be a trilogy.

“I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see," she shared in an interview with The Daily Mail. But, that's not all. As Craymer told the publication, not only will this third installment include more zany antics from the characters people have come to love on both stage and screen, but it would also come with all-new music from ABBA too. 

“I know Universal would like me to do it,” Craymer added, noting that a new film would likely debut four new ABBA numbers. 

As for when this entire production would come together, Craymer shared in the interview that she was hoping to use her time in coronavirus quarantine to write it. 

"I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with Covid fog,” she said, invoking the general malaise we can all most certainly relate to during these difficult times. So yes, you'll likely have to wait a rather long time for the third film, but if the first two films are any indication the wait will be worth it. 

Mamma Mia! isn’t done just yet. 

When asked if the third installment could come as a theater production rather than a feature film, Craymer replied, “It’s a thought,” adding that the U.K. government could step in to help with financing just as they did with Les Miserables when it first raised its curtain. 

"I think the Government should help," Craymer said. “It’s a massive economy, the theater. You can’t say London is open without the theaters being open.”

Craymer pointed out that coming back to the theater with a third production of Mamma Mia! in a post-coronavirus world will not only require financial assistance, but buy-in from heads of state as well.

“When we’re back, Boris must come to the theatre. The royals must come. It’s such an important part of people coming together — as much as we enjoy sitting at home watching a Netflix boxset,” she said. “Theater is the heartbeat of London and the entire country.” 

Well, there you have it: Here we go again! At least, we hope.
