Why is Alf so hostile towards newcomer Mali in Home and Away?

Mali (Kyle Shilling) has recently started coming to the Bay regularly to help Dean (Patrick O’Connor) out with the board shop, as he is increasingly spending time at home to support a pregnant Ziggy (Sophie Dillman). It’s a win-win situation – Dean feels confident the shop is in safe hands, while Mali is lapping up the Summer Bay lifestyle.

When Alf (Ray Meagher) notices the new face at the board shop, he makes sure Dean keeps everything above board by reminding him that Mali needs to fill out employment forms. Seeing how close the two men are, Alf gets suspicious…once Dean has gone home, Alf heads back out and suggests he helps Mali fill out the forms.

Mali makes excuses not to do it, but Alf won’t give up that easily. He asks Mali how he knows Dean, and Mali is vague again – they’re just mates. After more questions from Alf, Mali asks if this is part of the background check. Alf laughs it off, and turns to leave – then turns back and asks – have you got a problem with me?…

Later, Alf is walking along the beach when he notices Mali giving a surf lesson. Mali is briefing the students when he turns and notices Alf staring….once the lesson is over, Alf approaches Mali while he’s washing the boards. He offers Mali a free smoothie, only confusing the newcomer.

After some awkward small talk, Alf gets into it. He says he’s noticed Mali’s tattoos – does one of them read Blood and Sand?

Mali looks confused, but Alf won’t let up until he’s got an answer. He wants to know if Dean has brought his River Boy mate to the Bay – because if so, they’ve got a problem on their hands…
