Queen Mathilde of Belgium dazzled on Thursday night as she and King Philippe hosted a State Banquet for the Swiss President Ignazio Cassis and First Lady Paola Rodoni Cassis. The Belgian Queen donned a baby pink cape dress similar to gowns recently worn by Kate, Princess of Wales and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Mathilde’s dress was believed to be a custom-made Armani gown which she had worn before.

For accessories, the Queen carried a Giorgio Armani bag in gold and she donned several striking jewels for the occasion.

On top of her elegant updo, Mathilde wore the Laurel Wreath Tiara. She also wore a pair of diamond fringe earrings.

Mathilde’s look won approval on social media, with Instagram user isabelq42 commenting: “She wore this gown in 2019 for the Japanese enthronement ceremonies.

“Goes to show that even in her position as Queen, she chooses to wear a repeat gown for the State Dinner. Good for her.”

Another user, babi_buso, said: “Now, this is how you do it, clean, elegant and classy not too much bling. Love it.”

Cape dresses are currently all the royal rage, and several royals have stepped out in one over the last few months.

Just two days before Mathilde’s outing in Brussels, Kate, Princess of Wales donned a white Jenny Packham dress with bejewelled shoulders and a dramatic floor-length cape.

Kate paired her outfit with an Alexander McQueen box clutch and glam Gianvito Rossi pumps.

Like Mathilde, Kate pulled out all the stops with a glimmering tiara, opting for her go-to Lover’s Knot diadem and a pair of Princess Diana’s South Sea pearl and diamond earrings.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex also recently donned an elegant cape dress for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September.

Meghan’s black midi was a Stella McCartney design, and she accessorised with sheer tights, court shoes, mid-length black gloves and a wide-brimmed black hat.

The Duchess also wore a pair of pearl earrings gifted to her by the Queen as a subtle tribute.

Kate and Meghan have long been fans of a cape dress, and the Princess of Wales donned a jaw-dropping one last year.

For the premiere of the James Bond film, No Time To Die, Kate donned a gold sequin gown with a waterfall-style cape by Jenny Packham which she paired with gold pumps, gold jewellery and glam make-up.

The Duchess of Sussex also donned two dramatic cape dresses for her final round of UK royal engagements in March 2020.

For the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey, Meghan wore an emerald green cape dress by Emilia Wickstead with a matching pillbox hat and nude pumps.

Meghan also wore a red cape dress by Safiyaa for the Mountbatten Festival of Music that same week.

The Duchess had previously worn a powder blue Safiyaa cape gown during her visit to Fiji in 2018 with Prince Harry.

To emphasise the dramatic cape, Meghan kept her jewellery minimal with a pair of chandelier earrings and a pair of dark blue pumps.
