My fiance has such an awful surname that I don’t want to give it to our kids – I told him and now he’s furious | The Sun

A BRIDE-TO-BE has left her future husband furious after revealing she doesn't want their kids to have his "miserable" surname.

The woman took to Reddit to explain that she's decided to keep her own name when she says "I do", because her spouse's surname translates to "miserable face" in English.

"I absolutely refuse to talk about giving his last name to our kids in any form," she wrote.

"Not by itself, not hyphenated, not in any way.

"His last name translates to 'sour face', 'pitiful face' or 'miserable face' (I don’t think there is a direct translation).

"I think it should be evident that I don’t want to call my children names like 'Peter MiserableFace' and I don’t understand why giving them just my last name is a problem."

However, when she broached the subject with her fiance, he took her reluctance to take his name as a "very bad sign" for their marriage.

He even accused her of being "disrespectful" for refusing to come to a compromise.

"His 'compromise' would be the kids getting the first letter of my last name too, so for example 'Peter R. MiserableFace'," she continued.

"My compromise is us all picking a new last name, that could be one of his grandparents' last name too or his mother's maiden name if he wants it to have his family history."

Wondering whether or not her husband-to-be has something of a point, she asked Reddit users for their thoughts on the matter – to which the response was largely divided.

"The 'compromise' isn't a real compromise if your surname is only displayed as one letter," one person wrote.

"Let's turn it around! Peter (his surnames first letter) and your last name. Still sounds like a compromise to him?

"If you don't want your kids to have a name which is bully-material, it is totally understandable. A real compromise would be to hyphenate your surnames."

While another added: "Neither of you wants to compromise in any meaningful way.

"Clearly, both of you put a lot of value in your names and aren't recognising that the other person probably feels just as intensely about it as the other.

"I'd say do hyphenated and give your kids the option to pick later.

"If it really comes down to neither of you agreeing how that will work, flip a coin on whether it's 'sourface-yourname' or 'yourname-sourface' so it's completely up to chance."
