‘We’re living in an insane time’: Taylor Swift talks ‘mistakes’ at Teen Choice Awards

Taylor Swift has a furr-ocious new award. 

The 29-year-old singer received the Teen Choice Awards’ inaugural Icon Award Sunday – and got real about her own imperfections, telling the young crowd that “mistakes are inevitable.”

Her friend, soccer star Alex Morgan, presented the award, praising Swift for lending “a hand to causes big and small” and inspiring “others through her actions.” 

Dressed in a technicolor Versace ensemble that highlighted her long legs, Swift accepted a personalized surfboard award adorned with images of her cats: Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button. “It’s just so meow, and I’m really having a proud moment,” she said during the Fox broadcast. “Aesthetically speaking, this may be my favorite award.”

In her speech, Swift encouraged the audience to support the World Cup champion women’s national soccer team and their fight for equal pay. 

“Please, please, please support (Morgan) and her teammates, because this isn’t over yet,” said Swift. “It’s not resolved. Get online, talk about it, let people know how you feel about it, because what happened to them is unfair, it’s happening everywhere, and they are heroes and icons for standing up.”

Swift then spoke directly to her teen fans, sharing a message about accepting imperfections.

“I think one thing I wish I would’ve known as a teen is that mistakes are inevitable,” she said. “Sometimes you think if you try hard enough to make every decision perfectly, you think you can possibly, like, ace life, and never make any mistakes. But it’s normal to make mistakes, and I just want you to know that if you’re out there, and you’re being really hard on yourself right now for something that’s happened, or messing up, or feeling embarrassed, it’s normal. That’s what’s going to happen to you in life.

“No one gets through unscathed,” she added. “We’re all gonna have a few scratches on us. We’re living in an insane time, please be kind to yourselves and stand up for yourself, please.”

Before concluding her speech, Swift teased new music: Her new song “Lover” will drop Friday, she said. Her album is slated for release on Aug. 23.

It was a big weekend for Swift, who got the meme treatment early Sunday after she was captured throwing a party for those she collaborated with on music videos for new singles, “Me!” and “You Need to Calm Down.”

Swift embraced the hashtag on social media.
