Taylor Swift reveals past eating disorder

Taylor Swift once struggled with an eating disorder, revealing in her new documentary that she used to “starve” herself after seeing paparazzi photos she found unfavorable.

In “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana” — which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday night — the pop star says (via E! News): “It’s only happened a few times, and I’m not in any way proud of it. A picture of me where I feel like I looked like my tummy was too big, or … someone said that I looked pregnant … and that’ll just trigger me to just starve a little bit — just stop eating.”

The 30-year-old singer, who grew up in the spotlight, also describes her relationship with food as “unhealthy” in the past.

In a Variety cover story timed with the release of the Sundance premiere (which Swift said would be her only interview about the doc), she elaborated that her “relationship with food was exactly the same psychology that I applied to everything else in my life: If I was given a pat on the head, I registered that as good. If I was given a punishment, I registered that as bad.”

The “Lover” singer described a time when a magazine asked if she was pregnant at 18 because “I had worn something that made my lower stomach look not flat,” which she “registered as punishment.” But she’d feel praised when she could walk onto the set of a photoshoot and fit into the sample size fashions.

“And I looked at that as a pat on the head,” she told Variety. “You register that enough times, and you just start to accommodate everything towards praise and punishment, including your own body.”
