Taylor Swift used her winning speech to address a "sexist tweet" and told fans to "stand up for yourself" as she picked up the Icon award at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards.

The annual ceremony is voted for by fans aged 13 and over and features categories in film, TV, music, sport and social media.

Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson was also a big winner, bagging the gong for choice song: male artist for the single Two Of Us, reportedly written about his late mother.

This made him a three-time Teen Choice winner as a solo artist, on top of the 28 that One Direction won.

In accepting the award, he thanked fans for the win: "My fans are the reason I'm here today, and this is for you."

Taylor meanwhile had won the first-ever icon award and used her acceptance speech to call for gender equality before announcing the release date of a new single.

The 29-year-old singer was introduced to the stage by Alex Morgan, who won the World Cup with the US women's football team in July.
