Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt came to blows during the ITV debate as they clashed on topics including Brexit and UK relations with Donald Trump.

Speaking about the debate on Twitter, Piers Morgan, 54, believed Jeremy ended up victorious.

The Good Morning Britain host said to his 6.7 million followers: “Hunt won that debate. Boris started well then blew it by descending into bluster, obfuscation & question-avoidance.

“Hunt grew in confidence, answered questions & rattled his opponent.”

He added: “All expertly moderated by @julieetchitv & directed by @errongordon. #ITVDebate.”

However, many of Piers’ fans didn’t agree with one writing: “Totally disagree Piers on this one. Boris is the man to get us out of the EU. Hunt confirmed he is a make copy of May.”

Another said: “I disagree, Piers. Boris’s good humour & optimism is a breath of fresh air.”

A third wrote: “Nope, sorry Piers, Hunt came across as limp. Boris won, just had to listen to the audience reactions.”

During the debate, Piers tweeted: “Boris is losing it. Does he have the temperament for the top job? #ITVDebate.”

In another post, he said: “Weak dodge by Boris on Sir Kim.. either back him or don’t back him. Spineless fence-sitting not a good look in a leader. #ITVDebate.”

Boris refused to confirm whether he would keep the UK’s top diplomat in the US, Sir Kim Darroch, in his post until he is due to retire later this year.

He said: “I think it is absolutely vital that the advice that civil servants give to ministers should not be leaked by ministers and should not be commented on by ministers if civil servants are going to feel free to give that advice with the impartiality that they want.”

But he refused to say whether he would keep Sir Kim in post, and instead told the ITV debate: “It is vital that our civil service is not politicised by ministers leaking what they say. Whoever leaked that deserves to be eviscerated.”

However, Jeremy said he would “certainly” keep Sir Kim in the role.

The MPs also clashed on matters regarding Brexit, with Jeremy demanding to know whether Boris would quit the role as Prime Minister if he did not take the UK out of the EU by October 31, as planned.

“My opponent is clearly not committed to coming out of the EU on October 31,” Boris said back.

Addressing Brexit, Jeremy continued: ”We need leadership that is going to guide us through a big constitutional crisis and make a great success of Brexit, that means being honest with people about the challenges.”

He also issued a warning about the prospect of suspending Parliament in order to force through a no-deal Brexit through. which Boris hasn’t ruled out.

“When that has happened in the past, when Parliament has been shut down against its will, we actually had a civil war,” Jeremy said.

Boris responded saying he’s not going to take “anything off the table, any more than I’m going to take no deal off the table”.

Good Morning Britain airs from 6am on ITV.
