After a rough childhood in states including New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Washington and, ultimately, California, Demi Moore (born Demi Guynes) settled with her family in West Hollywood. Demi, seen here in an undated portrait taken circa 1982, moved out on her own at 16 and signed with the Elite Modeling Agency before enrolling in drama classes after being inspired by her next-door neighbor, 17-year-old German actress Nastassja Kinski.

Demi Moore was 16 (and still known as Demi Guynes) when she met married musician Freddy Moore, the frontman for the band Boy, at Los Angeles nightclub The Troubadour. The couple — pictured at an L.A. party in March 1982 — wed in 1981 and divorced four years later.

Demi Moore got her first big acting break when she joined the cast of the popular daytime soap opera “General Hospital” in 1982 (the same year she posed for this portrait with co-star Anthony Geary). The rising star played an investigative reporter on the show until 1983.

Demi Moore’s movie career took off in 1984 after she was cast in the comedy “Blame It on Rio” alongside established co-stars Michael Caine and Valerie Harper.
