John McCain’s widow, Cindy McCain, penned an emotional essay one year after losing her husband to brain cancer.

Cindy, 65, explained in her essay for People that her late husband didn’t want his family to commemorate the anniversary with “tears” but rather celebrate “the life we shared with him.”

“It was a struggle at times to reach this point. I was so accustomed to sharing life with John, there were days when I felt overwhelmed by his absence, and the habits and little problems of ordinary life seemed a challenge,” she wrote. “But you learn it’s okay to not be okay every day.

“You learn to live with a broken heart, and the bad days become fewer, and the time in between richer and more meaningful.”

Cindy said that being a mother to her four children — Meghan, Bridget, James and Jack — with the late senator helped her navigate her grief because she had to serve as a support system for her now-adult kids.

“My children are adults, but they were hurting too, and being a trusted counselor and supportive presence to them is the most fulfilling purpose I have,” she shared, noting her son Jack is expecting his first child with wife Holly.

Though she’s aware tough days still lie ahead, Cindy’s found solace in moving back to the Arizona neighborhood she grew up in and where she and her late husband first lived when they were married.

“Things are getting better, as he promised us they would before he left us. We still miss his dynamism, his humor, the adventures we shared, the fun we had together,” she ended her essay. “We miss his fighting spirit, especially when it served the causes he cared about most — respect for the dignity of all people and the political values that best protect it: liberty and justice for all.”

The Arizona senator died on Aug. 25, 2018, at age 81.
