Dan Walker: BBC Breakfast presenter left red faced after major political blunder

The BBC Breakfast host was humiliated on Twitter by viewers after he made political mishap. When talking about Ireland and the backstop, Dan referred to Leo Varadkar, the Irish Taoiseach or Prime Minister, as the “President of Ireland”.

The Twitter user was quick to pounce on Dan’s lack of political knowledge.

The user wrote: “Mr Dan Walker, Leo Varadkar is the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) not President.”

Dan was quick to amend his mistake, albeit in a flat and almost passive aggressive manner.

He replied: “Apologies. Entirely my fault for being an idiot. Hope you have a nice Wednesday.”

The user cheekily hit back: “Slip of the tongue I think, you were correct in next link.

“Have another coffee.”

The blunder came following Mr Varadkar’s interview on RTÉ in which the Irish leader claimed it would be very difficult for the UK and EU to reach a Brexit agreement before October 31.

Mr Varadkar reasoned that a no deal Brexit would hit Ireland and Britain worst, with European countries escaping largely unscathed.

He also described some Brexit discussions as having almost collapsed and turned toxic “in some quarters”.

Mr Varadkar and Boris Johnson are expected to hold further Brexit discussions later this week.

Dan’s mixing up of Mr Varadkar’s name is not the first time the BBC man has made a mistake live on air.

Last week, when discussing Tesco’s boss, Dave Lewis, leaving the company.

The businessman was largely known as “the bloke who saved Tesco”, but will leave the company in 2020.

Dan and Louise Minchin welcomed business reporter Ben Thompson on to the sofa to discuss the huge news and the former took the opportunity to pun about the news.

Welcoming Ben in to the studio, Dan said: “We’ve been getting response to the big news of the day that Tesco’s boss is checking out.

“Ben Thompson, we’ve been talking about this for the last hour, hour and a half… did you write that?”

The business reporter laughed: “I wrote it in a headline earlier and hearing you say it, it’s too far.”

Dan joked: “I saw your face when I said that and you thought, ‘Oh terrible.’

“I’d like to apologise for all that.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC at 6am.
