The redditor added that at this point his dad placed his passport on the counter as the pair checked their suitcases for what they needed before the luggage went into the hold.

The pair made it onto the plane and were annoyed to see "a ton of room in the overhead bin".

The poster continued: "After 2 hours, we realized we couldn’t find my dad’s passport. The flight attendants were really kind and called the airport for us.

"They told us somebody found my dad’s passport “on the floor” even though it was clearly on the stupid gate attendant’s counter."

It meant the pair had to fly 13 hours to Tokyo, before flying back home.

After this they had to fork out £1,600 fly back again the next day and rebook hotels.

The fuming redditor finished off by saying that it was a "disaster" because the attendant "couldn’t bother to recheck the overhead bin".

The Redditor added: "His passport was next to their computer. There’s no way somebody just walked by and knocked it off.

"She told us she could find a different flight, so my dad put his passport on her desk and she even opened it and read his name.

"We ultimately decided we were gonna check our suitcases and boarded the flight."

Redditors were divided in the comments section.

While some believed it is your "own personal responsibility" to look after your passport and belongings at all times.

Others said that the flight attendant had "distracted" the pair and caused the debacle.
