These are the places people want to go on holiday after lockdown ends

05/07/2020

Remember going on holiday? Getting up just after dawn, drinking a £6 pint of beer at 8am, walking off the plane to a physical wall of heat. We miss it so much.

But holidays will become part of our reality again. It may not be all that soon – but one day we will eat ice cream in sun-drenched piazzas again, we will fall asleep on quiet beaches, we will explore quaint, sleepy towns and markets full of treasures.

When that day does come – where will we go? If, like us, you’re spending a large proportion of your lockdown time fantasizing about the future, your dream travel plans are probably high on that list.

A new survey, by Holiday Extras, has revealed where people want to jet off to as soon as travel becomes a realistic option once again.

Of those polled, 60% of people said they have plans to travel abroad this year, and 81% said that they were looking forward to an overseas trip when travel restrictions come to an end. 15% say that they will be ‘getting on the first plane that the government says is safe.’

How many of these destinations would make your dream list?

Spain

No, it’s not the most glamorous or creative European destination – but Spain topped the list of where people want to go first.

Which is probably because you know exactly what you’re getting with Spain. Great weather, great food, great beaches. What’s not to love?

United States

Next on the list is the U.S – which is a pretty broad stroke to be honest.

Depending on where you end up you could have the metropolitan delights of New York, the creativity of San Francisco, the beaches of California.

Whether you’re after desert, snow, forest or city, the U.S has it all.

Greece

Next is Greece. Immerse yourself in the historical delights of the mainland, or island hop between picturesque paradises.

No matter which island you end up on, you know you’re going to get gorgeous food, crystal clear water and plenty of sunshine.

France

Vineyards, cheese, rolling green countryside – and that’s just the north of France.

Beyond the idyllic greenery, you have the arty hub of Paris, or head south for some guaranteed sunshine and lazy days on the beach.

Italy

Food, food, food. Let’s be honest, Italian food has to be up there with cuisines of the world.

Spend your days touring pasta restaurants, or take in the architectural beauty of Venice and Rome.

The Canary Islands

Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria, this collection of beautiful islands holds a wealth of beauty with stunning landscapes and dramatic beaches.

Try El Hierro, one of the smallest islands, for something a little different.

Turkey

The specific location of Turkey between Europe and Asia gives it a unique flavour of culture that translates in its cuisine, architecture and even the landscape.

Istanbul is an incredible city with a wealth of empirical history, stunning mosques and museums.

Portugal

Ever-popular Lisbon is a fantastic option for a city break, with a beach just a short train ride away.

Take in the stunning views from the hill tops that overlook the city, or head to Porto for something a little different – with plenty of delicious food.

Amsterdam

Beautiful rivers, a vibrant nightlife and, of course, marijuana is legal.

Take a bike through this beautiful city before chilling out for the afternoon in one of the many famous cafes – it could be just what you need after the stress of the pandemic.

Cyprus

Cyprus is known for its stunning beaches, and you can happily lose days lounging on white sand in the sun.

But head inland, as it also has a rugged interior with beautiful wine regions.

We asked the Lifestyle team at Metro.co.uk where they wanted to go after lockdown, and their answers were decidedly more ambitious:

Japan

Mexico

Cuba

Jordan

Korea

Iceland
