Hotel suites don’t get more sumptuous than this – as any globetrotting millionaire can confirm.

Private jet lifestyle magazine Elite Traveler has drawn up its annual list of the 100 best hotel suites in the world for 2023 – a guide that’s described as a ‘definitive index of the most opulent, extravagant and decadent accommodations on the planet’ .

In a new twist this year, the suites have been divided into 10 categories, from the best suites in recently-opened hotels to the top family-friendly suites around the world.

The list includes a hotel room with ‘showstopper’ views of the Chicago skyline, a wine lover’s suite with a bed that’s been carved into a wooden port barrel, and a historic French enclave with walls painted by an 18th-century artist who worked for Marie Antoinette.

Elite Traveler says: ‘Exceptional amenities, stunning design and over-the-top attention to detail ensure these suites are a cut above the rest.’

THE BARON SUITE, HOTEL CHATEAU DU GRAND-LUCE, LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE: Elite Traveler declares that this suite, listed in the ‘Editor’s Choice’ category, is a ‘strong contender for the most lavish suite in all of Europe’. It offers ‘fabulous views’ of the hotel’s neoclassical gardens, has a private library, and the living room’s walls have been painted by 18th-century artist Jean-Baptiste Pillement. There is only one other place in the world you’ll find a painted wall by this artist – the Petit Trianon, Marie Antoinette’s private garden palace at Versailles. Stays start from £12,365 ($15,000) per night

ARTISTS VILLA, AMANYARA, TURKS AND CAICOS: According to Elite Traveler, the best part about this suite is its ‘vast’ outdoor space, which is complete with several lounges, sundecks and dining spots that lead out to the 108ft (33m) infinity pool. It says: ‘Beyond, the pure-white sand and glistening ocean beckon.’ It’s ranked in the ‘Top Beach Suites’ category. Stays start from £14,853 ($18,000) per night 

PRESIDENTIAL SUITE, THE YEATMAN HOTEL, VILA NOVA DE GAIA, PORTUGAL: Housed in a hotel that’s a ‘veritable mecca for wine lovers’, this suite, listed in the ‘Editor’s Choice’ category, features a bed that has been carved into a wooden Port barrel, Elite Traveler reveals. Its bedrooms and living areas lead to a terrace with a private swimming pool and garden with ‘magical views of the Porto skyline’ – use the suite’s telescope to get a closer look at the view. Stays start from £2,058 ($2,495) per night 

INFINITY SUITE, THE LANGHAM CHICAGO: Elite Traveler says that this Editor’s-Choice-category-listed suite offers ‘sweeping views’ of the Chicago skyline, the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. There are floor-to-ceiling windows in most rooms, but the bathrooms are the ‘real showstoppers’ – the deep-soaking tub, pictured, looks out on an ‘exceptional’ Chicago panorama. Stays start from £9,906 ($12,000) per night 

GRAND SUITE, ROYAL MANSOUR, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO: This suite, ranked as an Editor’s Choice, is ‘the stuff of legend’. Reeling off the four-bedroom suite’s staggering list of amenities, Elite Traveler says there’s ‘an office, two dining rooms, a Moroccan lounge, bar and snooker room, three sunrooms, home cinema, hammam, gym, swimming pool, a landscaped private garden and a roof terrace with views of the Atlas Mountains’. Stays start from £35,861 ($43,500) a night 

THE RIADS, LA MAMOUNIA, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO: Above is one of three ‘Private Riads’ at La Mamounia, which come with their own heated swimming pools and private terraces. Describing the hotel they’re set inside, which opened in the 1920s as a ‘winter paradise for French diplomats’, Elite Traveler says: ‘The Marrakech dwelling of choice for everyone from Winston Churchill to the Kardashians, La Mamounia is fabulously opulent and unapologetically luxurious.’ These suites are listed in the ‘Top Historic Suites’ category. Stays start from (£12,356) $15,000 per night

THE ENDEAVOUR PENTHOUSE CASTLE APARTMENT, GLENAPP CASTLE, SOUTH AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND: This suite, ranked in ‘Top Family Suites’, enjoys its own floor in the 19th-century Glenapp Castle and features a private elevator – a ‘rare feature in buildings of this age’. Elite Traveler says: ‘The Penthouse has several amenities you would usually only find in a top city hotel including a media room, private sauna, treatment room, 16-seat dining room and a game room.’ As a bonus, a stay includes the ‘services of a private chef with a stocked kitchen and a butler’. AMAN SUITE, AMAN NEW YORK, MANHATTAN: Appearing in the ‘Top New Suites’ category, this suite is one of two expansive Aman Suites that boast pivoting partition walls that connect the living room and study with the bedroom, a ‘glowing’ fireplace and heated bathroom floors. The hotel, which launched last year, is described by Elite Traveler as ‘a serene haven away from the bustle of the city’. Stays start from $25,000 (£20,607) per night

THE BULGARI VILLA, BULGARI RESORT DUBAI, UAE: Listed in the ‘Top Family Suites’ category, this elegant villa feels ‘very grown up’, but ‘a lot of consideration has gone into family stays’, says Elite Traveler. It features over 5,000 sq ft (464 sq m) of outdoor space, a private pool and a home cinema, and there are a ‘raft of in-suite dining options from the resort’s seven restaurants – great for fussy eaters’. Stays start from £40,646 ($49,315) per 14-night stay, which is the villa’s minimum stay

KISAWA RESIDENCE, KISAWA SANCTUARY, BENGUERRA ISLAND, MOZAMBIQUE: Comprised of two bungalows connected via an open-air deck, this suite – ranking in the ‘Top New Suites’ category – ‘sits on its own two-acre plot and has a private infinity pool, beach and outdoor kitchen’, Elite Traveler reveals. The eco-retreat that it lies on, which is spread across ‘700 acres (283 hectares) of forests and white sandy beaches’, opened last summer. Stays start from £4,029 ($4,890) per night 

RAJA MAN SINGH POOL SUITE, SIX SENSES FORT BARWARA, RAJASTHAN, INDIA: Overlooking an ‘idyllic’ lake, this suite – ranking in the ‘Top New Suites’ category – ‘features a tranquil white marble bathroom and a shady private garden complete with a dining pavilion’. Elite Traveler adds that the hotel is ‘situated within a beautifully preserved 14th-century fort originally owned by the Rajasthani royal family’. Stays start from £5,936 ($7,200) per night

IMPERIAL SPA VILLA, PORTO ZANTE VILLA & SPA, ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE: This suite, comprised of two villas with individual private pools, offers guests direct access to a private beach area overlooking the Ionian Sea. Part of the boutique, family-run resort Porto Zante Villa & Spa, it’s listed in the ‘Editor’s Choice’ category. Stays start from £12,055 ($14,600) per night 

THE RITZ-CARLTON ESTATE, THE RITZ-CARLTON MALDIVES, FARI ISLANDS, MALDIVES: ‘With its own exclusive cove and private white-sand beach, the oceanfront Ritz-Carlton Estate promises a memorable stay,’ Elite Traveler says of this three-bedroom suite, which comes with a dedicated golf cart so you can travel around the resort with ease. It’s ranked in the ‘Top New Suites’ category and stays start from £22,675 ($27,500) per night

VISTA FIVE-BEDROOM GRAND RESIDENCE, MONTAGE BIG SKY, MONTANA, USA: Elite Traveler brands this suite, listed in the ‘Top New Suites’ category, as an ‘opulent abode’ that ‘features five marble bathrooms, each with stand-alone soaking tubs, separate walk-in showers and double vanities’. The resort it’s housed within is a short drive from Yellowstone National Park and has ‘unrivalled’ ski-in/ski-out access straight to Lone Mountain. Stays start from £5,531 ($6,700) per night 

BELLINI SUITE, PASSALACQUA LAKE COMO, ITALY: This ‘lavish’ suite is where the 19th-century composer Vincenzo Bellini composed some of his operas, Elite Traveler reveals, and it features a ‘breathtaking’ reception room with double-height vaulted ceilings and a grand piano in the corner. PRIVATE RESERVE, SIX SENSES SHAHARUT, ISRAEL: This suite, which ranks in the ‘Top New Suites’ category, offers the ‘best’ views of Israel’s rocky Arava Valley and Edom Mountains, and boasts a spa treatment room, a steam room and an enormous private pool, Elite Traveler notes. ‘Don’t miss a visit to the on-site camel stables,’ it adds. THREE BEDROOM ROYAL MOUNTAIN VILLA, ANANTARA AL JABAL AL AKHDAR RESORT, NIZWA, OMAN: This suite is set within one of the world’s highest five-star hotels, located ‘on the cusp of a huge canyon’ on Oman’s Green Mountain. Removed from the rest of the resort, Elite Traveler reveals that the suite has its own private entrance and an infinity pool and hot tub with ‘fine mountain views’. HERITAGE SUITE, SOMMERRO HOUSE, OSLO, NORWAY: Listed in the ‘Top New Suites’ category, this ‘exclusive and luxurious abode’ adheres to a glamorous Art Deco theme with velvet wall coverings and a unique mother-of-pearl headboard, Elite Traveler reveals.
