What is it like?

Featuring a trendy cocktail bar and restaurant with outdoor dinning, The Northgate has gone from strength to strength since opening last year.

Recently renovated by the The Chestnut Group, the superb hotel sits in the heart of historic Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

Rooms any good?

There are ten classic rooms, all tastefully decorated and ultra comfortable.

With oodles of character and charm from the original house, each space has a stunning en-suite, flat screen TV, tea and Nespresso machine.

Guests also get free wifi, parking and are treated to homemade biscuits in their room upon arrival.

Our favourite was the Duncombe which had lovely views of the south facing garden, a beautiful free standing bath and a rain forest shower that was so good it was hard to leave.

Eat there or grab a pizza?

With produce and ingredients sourced locally and freshly as possible, The Northgate’s menus change with the seasons.

To start we went for the crispy squid and duck pate then managed to chomp our way through some melt in your mouth rib-eye and sirloin steak.

A big shout out has to go to the triple cooked chips.

Breakfast blew us out out of the water.

You can tuck into loads of options including freshly baked pastries, a flawless full-English, homemade yogurt and fruit as well as freshly squeezed juice.

If you’re feeling more adventurous there are tasty pancakes and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on offer – all served with a smile from the outstanding staff.

The restaurant, with its award winning chefs is a popular spot with both locals and visitors for lunch and dinner so be sure you book ahead.

What else?

In addition to the restaurant, with the option of eating in front of the kitchen at the chefs table, the hotel has one of the coolest bars in the area, hidden at the back of the building. The cocktail menu has something to suit everyone and you can either sit at the bar or chill out in the lounge in front of the fire.

The hotel is a moment away from the ancient Abbey and its beautiful gardens as well as the Green King Brewery and its fantastic tour and tasting sessions.

So you’d go back?

Yes please! This boutique gaff has it all. Excellent service, a constantly evolving food menu and stunning rooms make The Northgate one of the most charming hotels.
