A HUGELY popular rollercoaster is set to reopen to the public this summer after it was closed for refurbishments at the start of the year.

Theme parks are a great place for families to spend a day out during the summer holidays and one of them is preparing to reopen its biggest attraction.

Megafobia at Oakwood in Narberth, Wales has been closed for several months, with a £1.5million renovation announced at the start of the year.

In January, the theme park said: "In the summer of 2022 we appointed American rollercoaster design and construction company ‘The Gravity Group’ to undertake a $2M (£1.5m) programme of retrack works on our famous wooden coaster, Megafobia."

The work has since been completed and the park is in the final stages of the renovation, testing the track, before the park can decide on a date to reopen it to guests.

Initially, they had hoped for it to be completed by May, however it looks set to be reopened again in the not-too-distant future.

In an update published last month, Oakwood confirmed: "The drop is complete. Each bend has been perfected. The track is prepared and ready. Each rail has been laid. It’s time to test.

"We will announce our intended Megafobia opening date, along with some exciting launch events and opportunities to be some of the very first riders of the year."

The news has been well-received by rollercoaster enthusiasts hoping to get back on the wooden ride this year.

The European Coaster Club tweeted: "The final pieces of Megafobia have been fitted!

Oakwood is the biggest theme park in Wales and is home to more than 35 different rides and attractions.

They include the Skull Rock log flume, a sling-shot ride called Bounce, and rollercoasters Creepy Crawler and Speed.

Entry to the park costs £32pp with a day pass, while season passes are available from £56.

Oakwood is not the only theme park to be opening a new attraction this year, with Toverland in Sevenum, the Netherlands, announcing £10million worth of development.

That will include four new attractions: two large and two small, an adventurous water playground, a colourful toddler playground and "special experience elements" that are "full of magic".

Meanwhile, a new £3.6million adventure park has opened in the Cotswolds with zip wires and secret chambers.

And a new £250m waterpark is going to be built in the UK.
