The Hot List: UK staycation experiences from Sussex to Snowdonia

06/14/2021

On the lookout for things to do on your UK holiday?

The Hot List has handpicked some great trips for you to go on this summer.

Whether you’re a road-tripping adventurer or fancy living the high-life in Brighton, there’s plenty to discover.

Read on below to start making those holiday plans.

Experience Bridgerton for yourself

If you can’t wait for series 2 of Bridgerton to sex up our screens (advance warning: there won’t be any Hot Duke this time, sadly), new book Bridgerton’s England will at least give your eyes something else to drool over: the stunning stately homes and mansions used as filming locations.

Author and fan Antonia Hicks outlines the properties which stood in for the likes of Whites Club, where Anthony and Simon meet to smoke cigars (it was shot in The Reform Club in London, Winston Churchill’s gentleman’s retreat) and Madame Delacroix’s clothing boutique, Modiste (actually a deli in Abbey Street, Bath).

Other sites include Castle Howard, Hampton Court and Bath’s Royal Crescent, and the book examines their history, linking important scenes to each location and giving details of how you can visit them to relive the drama.

Go up the Brighton i360

Celebrate English Wine Week on board Brighton’s i360, which will elevate you slowly up to 450ft, offering a magnificent view of the Sussex coastline and the South Downs.

Aptly, Sussex-based vineyard Nyetimber provides its award-winning sparkling wines at the Sky Bar, and on June 23, it’s doing a one-off wine-tasting flight, where you’ll get to try three delicious glasses: classic cuvee, rosé and cuvee chérie.

Tickets cost £45pp

Take your dog to the beach

Britain is blessed with some beautiful beaches but not all are dog-friendly. And with 60% of dog owners admitting to missing their four-legged friends more than their partners or children while on holiday, accommodation company Dog Friendly Cottages has mapped out the best sandy spots with no restrictions for your pooch.

They include Cayton Bay in North Yorkshire (good for surfing and fossil hunting), Bispham Beach in Lancashire, and the seal-studded St Combs Beach, north-east Scotland.

Recreate a road trip

With Covid traffic-light chaos hitting international travel, stay closer to home with a UK road trip. Hotel brand Hilton recommends recreating the world’s most famous road adventures.

For example, you can swap South Africa’s Garden Route for Chester and Snowdonia, spotting wildlife in Chester Zoo (with a stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Spa Chester) before driving by coastlines and mountains in Wales (stopping at the Hilton Garden Inn Snowdonia).

Or channel the Côte d’Azur on our own south coast, visiting the Mayfield Lavender Farm on your way to Brighton and a stay at the Hilton Metropole on the seafront.

Escape to a country garden

Lose yourself in Somerset’s nature with The Newt hotel’s delightful Great Garden Escape package.

On a day trip from London Paddington, you’ll explore The Newt’s beautiful grounds, learning about what’s grown there from on-site experts.

There’s the chance to visit the immersive exhibition The Story Of Gardening, and tour the ‘cyder’ making facilities.

Included is a delicious lunch in the Garden Cafe, as well as an annual garden membership, plus breakfast and afternoon tea on the train in first class.

Runs every weekend until September 26.

Available from £295pp
