PASSENGERS flying with Ryanair could face even more travel chaos this summer after new strikes are announced.

The airline's cabin crew in Portugal have announced a series of strikes, just after the unions for its UK and Irish pilots said they were voting on industrial action.

Ryanair cabin crew in Portugal are set to strike for five days in August in a dispute over pay and conditions, the SNPVAC union said on Wednesday.

However, the exact dates have not been confirmed yet.

SNPVAC said Ryanair has refused to comply with a protocol signed last November, which it said included holiday pay, 22 days of annual leave per year and full compliance with Portuguese parental law.

A statement from the union added: "Facing the intransigence from Ryanair and the lack of interest of the Portuguese government on guaranteeing the fundamental labour rights to their citizens that work for Ryanair, the cabin crew had no other choice but to return to the industrial conflict."

News of the cabin crew strike come just days after Ryanair's Irish union announced that its members were voting on possible strike action.

FORSA-IALPA, which represents the pilots, said there was "frustration and disappointment" among pilots over a lack of progress in ongoing pay talks with the company.

The results of the ballot (vote) will be released on August 9 according to the union.

The union has not said when the strikes would go ahead if its members vote for industrial action, although this is likely to be two weeks later – from August 23.
