Outlander fans, rejoice! The gripping drama is set to return for a fifth season with Amazon UK set to release the show.

Production began in April and although there's no confirmed release date, it's expected to be around late 2019 or early 2020.

The show follows the adventures of nurse Claire (Catriona Balfe) who is transported back to the 1700s where she meets the dashing Jamie (Sam Heughan) – but it's not just the thrilling plot that's kept viewers gripped.

That's because all of the drama unfolds in front of some seriously spectacular backdrops. We're talking rugged scenery, breathtaking natural landmarks and some very cool historic sites.

The best part? Brits won't have to go far, as the series is shot on location in Scotland – and it's easy to visit the filming locations on a budget.

We take a look at some of the prettiest Outlander filming locations that need to be on your radar, as well as where you can find cheap hotels nearby if you fancy a trip.

The Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands is filled with beautiful places to visit so it's no surprise that the region was firmly on the production crew's radar.

The spectacular valley of Glencoe , for example, features in the series' opening credits.

Looking for a bit of history? Head to the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore which featured in a number of seasons in season one, including when Dougal collected the rent. The museum itself is quite fascinating as it offers a glimpse into how Scottish Highlanders lived in the 18th century.

Thinking of making a mini break of it? We've rounded up the best cheap hotels in the Scottish Highlands to give you a helping hand.

Glasgow

If you're planning a city break in Glasgow, you may want to visit some of Outlander's locations anyway as they're some of the city's most picturesque spots.

For example George Square was transformed into a 1940s film set for the first season (where Frank spontaneously proposes to Claire), but even without the cameras it's picture-perfect with the ornate buildings.

Looking for a bit of greenery? Both Kelvingrove Park and Pollok Country Park featured as filming locations and make for a pretty spot for a stroll.

Other hotspots include Glasgow Cathedral , The University of Glasgow and St Andrew's in the Square .

Edinburgh

The Scottish capital made a few appearances in seasons three and four.

For example the picturesque ruins of medieval Craigmillar Castle served as Ardsmuir Prison where Jamie is incarcerated, while the Signet Library doubled up as the Governor's Mansion set in Jamaica (if you want to spend some extra time here, they do afternoon teas!).

Bakehouse Close , which sits just off Edinburgh's Royal Mile, was transformed into an 18th century street to serve as the backdrop for Claire and Jamie's reunion, while Tweeddale Court also served as a reunion spot between Claire and Fergus.

Fife

The historic county is home to heaps of picturesque spots which caught the Outlander crew's attention.

For example, the pretty town of Falkland featured in seasons one, two and four with heaps of its buildings having starring roles; the Covenanter Hotel was Mrs Baird's Guesthouse, the Bruce Fountain served as the backdrop for the spooky ghost scene.

Culross was another town used in a number of scenes as it served as the fictional village of Cranesmuir,as well as scenes featuring the Jacobite encampment and makeshift hospital scenes.

Other destinations across the county included Dysart Harbour , Callendar House and Aberdour Castle .

Linlithgow

Linlithgow Palace and Blackness Castle both provided backdrops for scenes of Jamie's incarceration, while Muriavonside Country Park was the setting for the Battle of Prestonpans.

The nearby Beecraigs Country Park is also a must-visit as it boasts heaps of wildlife from red deer to sheep, while the park has plenty of fun activities and some sweeping landscapes that fans might recognise from the show.

Historic landmarks

There are plenty of historic sites you can visit which also featured in the show; think picturesque churches, stunning castles and grandiose stately homes.

For example, Tibbermore Parish Church served as Cranesmuir Church for the memorable witch trial scene, while other hotspots such as  Hopetoun House , Doune Castle , Dean Castle and Drumlanrig Castle were used for a variety of locations.
