ITV 's new show Belgravia is already proving a hit with viewers, with some even dubbing it as the new Downton Abbey.

The drama stars Tamsin Greig, Harriet Walter, Alice Eve and Philip Glenister, and is set in the 1800s in London, where the upper class see their secrets revealed while conflicts rage on such as the Battle of Waterloo.

Although the show is set in London's Belgravia, logistics meant that the cast and crew weren't able to film in Belgravia itself.

Gareth Neame, the show's Executive Producer, told History Extra : "It’s quite impossible to shoot in Belgravia. It’s the heart of London, it’s filled with embassies; there’s no way you can shut down these parts of London and have horses and carriages going around for four days.

"It would never happen, so what we did was to go to the New Town of Edinburgh. We shot all of the exteriors for Eaton Square and Belgrave Square, we shot around there, and then in post-production, we added all of the stucco and the porticos."

In fact, Visit Scotland has revealed some of the exact Scottish locations used for filming.

Edinburgh alone offered up heaps of locations. For example, Moray Place doubled up as the houses of Trenchard and Brockenhurst, as well as offering a setting for the Duchess's bedroom. Meanwhile, the nearby Moray Gardens served as Belgrave Square Gardens.

Other highlights include Darnaway Street where Stephen Bellasis' house was brought to life, as well as Harley Street.

As for general scenes, the city's High Court and Parliament Square served as London city streets, including Bishops Gate, while the City Chambers doubled up as the Albany Courtyard.

But it wasn't just Edinburgh which caught the crew's attention. Manderston House in Duns and Hopetoun in Queensferry provided scenes for Trenchard (Manderston also served as a location for Brockenhurst House).

Scotland wasn't the only UK spot which provided heaps of locations.

Other highlights included the Bath Assembly Hall which hosted the ballroom scenes in the first episode, while Hampton Court Palace was used for London scenes.

Wrest Park in Bedfordshire also appeared for some of the Brussels scenes, as well as chapel settings, while West Wycombe House in Buckinghamshire served as the Duchess of Bedford's townhouse in the show.

  • Belgravia airs on ITV on Sundays at 9pm.
