When it comes to booking cheap flights, timing is everything.

We're not just talking about how far ahead you should be booking , but right down to the day your flight departs too.

To give Brits a helping hand, Skyscanner has looked into what day of the week can often work out  the cheapest to fly from the UK.

The research revealed that for the last five years, Friday has consistently proven the cheapest day of the week for flights from the UK. (Of course this can be dependent on the route – but flying on a Friday could generally put the odds in your favour).

Those on a budget will want to avoid a Tuesday, which has risen to become the most expensive day to fly from Britain, overtaking Sunday which previously held the title.

In fact, switching from a Tuesday flight to a Friday flight could save Brits up to 11 per cent.

However, it's worth noting that the research also unveiled Friday to be the busiest day of the week for travel.

For those looking for the smallest crowds, head to the airport on a Sunday which is often the quietest day – and you may also want to check out our airport security hacks to make those queues as painless as possible.

If you're not a fan of crowds, or a Friday simply doesn't work for your chosen travel dates, the good news is that you won't necessarily need to break the bank.

If you can be flexible with your travel dates, it's worth comparing prices on flights the day before or the day after your original departure date, as sometimes this can result in a better value deal.
