Can I go on holiday after lockdown and where should I go?

11/23/2020

HOLIDAY bookings have had a last-minute boom following the announcement that the lockdown will end on December 2, despite the new rules yet to be announced.

There is likely to still be restrictions in place – here is what you need to know.

When is lockdown in the UK ending?

The UK has been in full lockdown since November 5, which has stopped all domestic and international holidays.

The government has since confirmed that the lockdown will end on December 2.

However, the country is likely to then go back into a tiered system, ranging from tier 1 to tier 3.

Boris Johnson will be announcing which regions will remain in the strictest tier 3 this week.

Will I be able to go on holiday after lockdown?

Going on holiday again will depend on the new restrictions and tiers.

Previously, holidays were allowed to go ahead if in tier 2 or tier 1, both abroad and in the UK.

Tier 2 regions were only allowed to go on holiday with their household while tier 1 had less restrictions.

It is yet to be confirmed whether these will go ahead from next month although it is assumed that hotels and holiday parks will be able to re-open with limited capacity.

Where can I go on holiday after lockdown?

Families wanting to go abroad may find their choices limited unless they are happy to quarantine or pay for a negative coronavirus test.

The following destinations are allowing Brits in without quarantining but require a coronavirus test before arriving:

  • Greek islands of Corfu, Crete, Kos, Rhodes, and Zante
  • Canary Islands
  • UAE (including Dubai)
  • Maldives
  • Barbados
  • Seychelles
  • Turks and Caicos Islands

However, the government is also expected to announce a reduction in the quarantine restrictions, currently 14 days after a holiday to a destination on the 'red list', to five days.

This will include two coronavirus tests, one on the first day and one on the fifth day, and will be at the holidaymakers expense.

This would mean a much shorter quarantine if returning from a holiday to Spain, Italy or Turkey.

There is just one destination open to Brits without quarantining on arrival or back in the UK, or having a negative coronavirus test.

Only Gibraltar is currently open to Brits with no travel restrictions.
