Tourism leaders have reported that hotels in the Balearics are likely to reach between 65 and 80 per cent occupancy in July.

While good news for the island's tourism industry, which has been hard hit by coronavirus, it could mean limited availability or more expensive options for holidaymakers.

Leaders said they believe that once travel corridors are opened from the UK and Germany, Majorca in particular will become "the main holiday destination for Europeans this summer".

The Balearic Association of Tourist Rental Homes (Habtur) is backing calls for Spain's holiday regions to be given different "traffic light signals" rather than the country as a whole, as the Balearic Islands are in a particularly good position to welcome back tourists.

Of course, foreign holidays are still banned for Brits, with the government reviewing the ban in early May and borders reopening no earlier than May 17.

There is no certainty that foreign holidays will go ahead at all this summer, but for those still happy to book a break, there are a number of cheap deals to be had on holidays to the Balearics.

Antoni Barceló, president of the Balearic Association of Tourist Rental Homes said: "The average occupancy in our area will be between 70 per cent and 80 per cent from July to September."

The UK government has confirmed a new traffic light scheme which will allow travel to open up again.

It will class countries as either green, amber, or red, depending on the state of the pandemic and rate of vaccinations although which countries this includes will be revealed next month.

Sadly, Spain is unlikely to be on the green list at first, meaning it is unlikely a holiday can resume to the destination from May 17.

Just 17 per cent of the population has had their first Covid jab – compared to the UK's 47 per cent.

The country hopes to have half of the population vaccinated by July.

This means the country is likely to be placed on the "amber" list, which requires a pre-test arrival as well as a 10-day quarantine at home, with tests on day two and eight.

Only if cases go down and the vaccine rollout is sped up, will it likely be put onto the "green" list for the summer.
