You helped me leave my emotionally abusive husband | The Sun

02/17/2023

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I first wrote to you, I was trapped in an unhappy marriage with a cheating husband I couldn’t trust.

We have three children, and he had persuaded me to give up work, making me financially reliant on him. I felt I couldn’t leave. I’m 44 and he’s 46.

You sent me your support pack, Abusive Partner, which made me see he was controlling me and would never change.

Although he wasn’t violent, he was abusive. He had made me dependent on him and pushed away my friends and family.

He didn’t like me going out without him, or having my own interests.

I followed your advice to contact Citizens Advice about my legal rights and benefits, and I got back in contact with old friends, explaining why I’d let our friendships drift.

They supported me when I decided to separate from my husband.

I’m now talking to a solicitor and enjoying some breathing space away from him.

I know it’s the right decision for me and my children. Thank you.
