Would YOU rent another woman’s wardrobe? That’s the idea behind a new service that lets you borrow designer dresses from just £34

  • Hurr Collective allows users to rent the clothes of others across the UK
  • Items available to rent include Rosie Fortescue’s jumpsuit, originally £500
  • Covetable accessories such as Chanel bags can be rented for up to £70 a week
  • Jess Wood shared advice for styling a selection of items available to rent

As an only child, I was always furious not to have a sister to borrow clothes from. But I did have a best friend with a glamorous teenage sister.

The thrill of rummaging in Christina’s room while she was out, trying on her crop tops and — swoon — real Levi’s denim jacket! Now, grown-ups can relive that thrill, thanks to the rise of wardrobe rentals with a twist — as you can borrow items from stylish women with a surplus of fabulous clothes.

The idea has been big business in the U.S. for years, and it’s made its way to the UK thanks to the Hurr Collective, available nationwide. Hurr calls itself ‘the Airbnb of fashion’ and is all about peer-to-peer lending. This means users rent each other’s clothes, rather than borrowing from stock held by the site, as is the case with dress rentals such as Girl Meets Dress.

Jess Wood picked out a selection of items available to rent from Hurr Collective, Dress by Rixo, £40 to rent, RRP £237, hurrcollective.com; Heels, £29.99, zara.com

Jumpsuit by Temperley London, £57 to rent, RRP £500, hurrcollective. com; Pumps, £275, thefold london.com

Anyone can sign up at hurrcollective.com and there are some seriously stylish pieces on offer, such as Made In Chelsea star Rosie Fortescue’s Temperley jumpsuit, a snip at £57 to loan (original price £500). But it’s not all lithe young things — renters in a range of sizes have signed up, including curve model Lucy Moore.

TV presenter Laura Whitmore is also a fan and recently wore the feathered leopard-print Matthew Williamson dress, pictured above right. And there are covetable accessories, such as Chanel bags (yours for between £50 and £70 a week), making designer style available at a reasonable rate.

Gown by Galvan, £172 to rent, RRP £1,000, hurr collective. com; Heels, £59, office. co.uk

Suit by Racil, blazer, £92 to rent, RRP £750; trousers, £75 to rent, RRP £420, hurr collective.com; Heels, £55.99, zara.com

Of course, borrowing instead of buying new is far more sustainable. CEO Victoria Prew says: ‘We’re on a mission to cut out fast fashion. We want pieces built to last.’

It may be too pricey for every day, but it’s ideal for a special occasion and, with party season around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better.

Dazzling evening options include a sequined dress by Rixo and an elegant powder-blue satin trouser suit by London-based label Racil, which has partnered with Hurr to offer surplus stock for rental. Victoria says the site will be working with other labels in the same way. As for me, I’ll be shimmying into cocktail hour in a gold ruffled Franks London dress made from upcycled fabric.

Christina, you can have your crop top back — I’ve got better options now.
