Car insurance costs can be quite expensive in the UK.

The average price tag to insure your car is around £416 a year, which is hefty with the cost of living crisis.

Now one woman has revealed how she managed to save around £288 on her quote with a quick five-minute check.

The Martin Lewis fan, known as Sarah, was quoted £650 for her annual car insurance renewal.

"With the cost of living going through the roof, I really appreciate the input from everyone at MSE."

Using a car insurance comparison website can help you to check many different providers to achieve the best quotes possible.

Normally you'd need to enter your number plate, details about yourself and your driving history.

Looking for car insurance prices exactly 23 days before your current policy runs out could see your prices cut in half.

But this does depend on individual circumstances and if you have made any claims in the last year.

MSE analysed more than 70million quotes from comparison sites to find this optimum time.

The website also said it is also similarly cheap a few days either side of the 23-day mark.

However, leaving it to the last minute could end up costing hundreds more so make sure you check early.

Not all car insurance providers are listed on comparison websites so check directly with companies too.

You could also try haggling your existing provider down in price.

It's not a guaranteed that you'll get money off, but you never know if you don't ask in the first place.
