A woman has revealed how her pre-wedding spray tan went disastrously wrong after her asking to be sprayed twice to make up for her ‘super pale complexion’.

Derrie Mathews, 36, from Buckinghamshire, got the £25 treatment three days before a wedding in order to give her winter skin a warm, summer glow.

But the trouble began when the natural redhead asked the beautician if she could be sprayed ‘twice’ leaving her ‘aghast’ when her tan came out far darker than she anticipated – in a scene reminiscent of Ross’s fake tan disaster in Friends.

Derrie, a childminder, woke up the day after her tan saying she couldn’t believe the shade she’d turned, both frightening and entertaining her family in equal measure.

She said: ‘l was aghast at what I looked like.

‘My husband couldn’t stop laughing, and my daughter was petrified that anyone would see me.’

‘I was going to a wedding, and I’m super, super pale – I am really freckly and white.

‘So, I just asked the girl if she would do it twice, so much darker.’

Derrie didn’t notice a huge difference in her completion initially, but as time went on, she began to realise that she’d made a big mistake.

Derrie, a childminder, woke up the day after her tan saying she couldn’t believe the shade she’d turned, both frightening and entertaining her family in equal measure.

She said: ‘You have to leave it on for eight hours and then wash it off after, and it was just getting darker and darker and darker.

‘But I didn’t wash it off after eight hours because it stops developing then.’

On Friday morning, when she awoke and looked in the mirror, she couldn’t believe the shade that she’d turned, much to the amusement of her husband.

‘My husband couldn’t stop laughing.

She added: ‘I knew I looked so ridiculous, so I didn’t tell him not to do it. I fully deserved everything!’

Derrie said her decision to get sprayed ‘twice’ was reminiscent of a famous Friends episode where Ross Geller has a similar spray tan experience.

Derrie didn’t notice a huge difference in her completion initially, but as time went on, she began to realise that she’d made a big mistake.

In ‘The One with Ross’s Tan’, in 10th season of the hit Sitcom, instead of getting a lighter grade ‘two’ shade, he ends up with a far darker grade ‘eight’ shade after misunderstanding the tanning procedure.

She said: ‘When the girl did it, my friend was with me, and I was saying, ‘I’m an eight, I’m an eight’ because that’s what Ross says!’

Derrie said she was expecting an ‘absolute ripping’ from pals at the wedding.

But despite that, she managed to find some positive points from her tanning experience.

She said: ‘It’s made my teeth look so white.

‘I can’t stop smiling and looking in the mirror, but then I see my face and I think: ‘Oh god’.

Although she didn’t get the result she wanted this time, Derrie insists she’ll go for a spray tan again.

She said: ‘I will go back – it makes me feel better when I have a tan.’

‘It’s nice to have a little bit of colour, but not the boot polish look – it’s not for me, I must say.’
