A woman who was killed by sharks while snorkeling on holiday tried to swim back to the boat with one arm, her family said.

Jordan Lindsey, 21, from California, was snorkeling in the Bahamas when she was encircled by the animals and killed.

She was swimming near Rose Island when her mum helplessly screamed and tried to warn her before she was attacked.

Speaking about the harrowing moment they watched their daughter being attacked, Jordan's father Michael said "the first shark took most of her right arm off" before she tried swimming to shore.

The family had gone on a last minute excursion, where Jordan and her mother, Kami, had gone snorkeling and Michael had gone to pet the island's pigs.

Michael described how Kami heard her daughter scream and by the time he arrived on the scene, Jordan was surrounded by sharks.

Mum Kami started swimming towards her daughter, shouting, "Jordan, come swim to me" – before noticing she was missing most of one arm.

Michael told Good Morning America : "They're [sharks] swimming slowly and Jordan said, 'Mom, there's another shark coming' and then it just hit – the second shark hit again like on her lower leg and just took a giant chunk out of her and then that's the last thing Jordan said."

Mum Kami attempted to punch the sharks away from her daughter, before managing to pull Jordan from the water and onto a nearby rocky area where they awaited a boat to take them back ashore.

Michael went on to describe how Kami watched her daughter die in her arms, adding: "I just kissed her on the forehead and said, see you later, Jordan."

The heartbroken dad said he has cried "every night" since the tragedy.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said Jordan was later pronounced dead at Doctor's Hospital in Nassau.

"We can confirm a U.S. citizen in the Bahamas succumbed to her injuries following a shark attack on June 26,'" a State Department spokesperson said to ABC .

Jordan's devastated father Michael said in a statement to NBC: "Her name was Jordan Lindsey… we already miss her so much. She was so caring. She loved all animals. It's ironic she would die getting attacked by a shark."

A doctor from Texas, Jace Holton, 32, was on the same tour boat as Jordan and even took a picture of the shark after the attack.

She explained that during the tour, visitors were taken to a roped-off area to snorkel with two guides before going to see the wild pigs on the other side of the island.
