Woman accuses bar of ‘homophobia’ after her girlfriend was refused entry for wearing jogging bottoms – despite the manager wearing similar trousers

  • Amber Paxton, 20, said she and Alyshia Walker, 21, travelled from Livingston
  • Instead of getting into the Pilgrim Bar in Edinburgh, they were refused entry
  • Amber blasted the bar on Facebook and said the incident was ‘homophobic’
  • Bar’s management has since reached out to Amber, saying it was a mistake

A woman has branded an Edinburgh bar ‘homophobic’ after she and her girlfriend were refused entry, apparently because of the trousers her partner was wearing.

Amber Paxton, 20, said she and Alyshia Walker, 21, travelled from Livingston to the capital for a night out on Saturday August 10.

But they were left standing in the rain when the manager of Pilgrim Bar allegedly told them they couldn’t enter because of Alyshia’s ‘cotton joggies’.

Amber Paxton, 20, said she and Alyshia Walker, 21, travelled from Livingston to the capital for a night out on Saturday August 10. Alyshia is pictured outside the bar in her Zara trousers

Amber told Edinburgh Live that initially the bouncer gave the couple no reason for refusing entry, and allegedly said it was ‘too busy’ for them to speak to a manager.

But when the general manager did come out, Amber said he was wearing similar trousers to Alyshia’s Zara jogger-style trousers.

In a post to Facebook, Amber wrote: ‘Please nobody go to Pilgrim Bar in Edinburgh. My partner has just been refused entry while standing in the pouring rain because she was wearing ‘cotton joggies’ as stated by the general manager, Lewis (who was wearing similar trousers!)

‘We were not given any point of contact to make a complaint, nor were we giving a reason for the refusal of entry after standing outside for 20 minutes waiting on a manager, because the bar was too busy.

‘Please see photos below and comment if you think Alyshia is wearing joggies or trousers (from Zara btw),’ wrote Amber, sharing a picture of her girlfriend in the trousers in question

‘After attempting to make a complaint, we were also told that there was no one further we could make it to nor could they give us contact numbers for their managers or the companies they are employed for.

‘Please see photos below and comment if you think Alyshia is wearing joggies or trousers (from Zara btw) ps that is the manager standing crossed armed in the background with trousers on also.’

Pilgrim’s management have since reached out to the couple and the bar’s managing director, Karen McCormick, said it was a ‘mistake’ from the door steward that led to the women not getting in.

‘I have arranged a meeting with Amber this week to apologise in person and to ensure this situation is not repeated in the future as our customer’s experience in the venue is something we value highly,’ she added.

Amber branded the bar, who have since apologised, ‘homophobic’ in a comment under her original post (above). ‘I have arranged a meeting with Amber this week to apologise,’ said a bar spokesperson
