Why Sydney Sweeney had to fight for her White Lotus role following Euphoria

It’s highly likely there’s not a single person out there who doesn’t know the name Sydney Sweeney.

The 25 year old probably has the Emmy winning drama series Euphoria to thank for that, not to mention her chaotic character Cassie who made her the star she is today.

While Sydney had appeared in some pretty high budget productions prior to the HBO show, including Everything Sucks! and The Handmaid’s Tale, it wasn’t until she stepped foot in the fictional town of East Highland, California that people really started to take note of her talent.

Which is why it’s so surprising that she has recently opened up about the fight she had to put up to get cast in Mike White’s satirical anthology series, The White Lotus.

Another Emmy-winning show, starring legends like Jennifer Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza, Sydney appeared in the first season as the entitled and outspoken Olivia Mossbacher on vacation at the White Lotus resort in Maui with her family and best friend, Paula.

However, the actor revealed that, just like everybody else, she auditions for her roles. Also, that her role in Euphoria hasn’t been the handy stepping stone to other major projects like people might have thought it would be.

Speaking to Variety, Sydney shared that the White Lotus casting team didn’t originally think that she would be a good fit for the character of Olivia.

“They didn’t think that I was right for White Lotus, because I did Euphoria," she said.

“So I put myself on tape, I auditioned for White Lotus just like everybody else and had a call back like everybody else.”

Fast forward to 2023, and Sydney’s latest film is worlds away from her previous projects. In fact, some may say it allowed her to break away from her signature troubled teen characters.

Sydney starred in the movie Reality, in the lead role of Reality Winner, whistleblower and ex-intelligence specialist who “was given the longest sentence for the unauthorised release of government information to the media.”

Speaking about the film, which received rave reviews from critics, Sydney said: “There’s always people who see me as Cassie or see me as Olivia. They send me scripts that are just like that. It’s the ones I have to fight for that usually are the ones that I want that are different, like Reality.”

Most recently, the 25 year old has been busy with her upcoming romcom, Anyone But You.

“It was so much fun, honestly. We laughed every single day and the cast and the crew were just a bunch of really great people, and we all got along,” she recalled.

“It felt like summer camp. It was a great breather from everything else I’ve done," she said, before admitting it’s the first time she’s ever “done something like that.’

“So I definitely enjoyed it. And I might look for some more,” she finished.

The world is definitely your oyster, Syd.
