Remembrance Day will be different this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and people are being urged to contribute in different ways to adhere to lockdown restrictions. Usually ahead of November 11, the Royal British Legion organises a poppy appeal by sending volunteers to streets, shopping centres and stations to raise money for charity. However, this year many will be unable to help out due to ongoing health crisis.

Where to buy a poppy

You can support the poppy appeal at the Royal British Legion’s online Poppy Shop.

The shop is open for you to order 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A traditional lapel paper poppy with stem costs £2 per item.

The shop also sells a wide range of other products.

Buying a product from the Poppy Shop means the legion can provide financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependants.

Other products available is a paper poppy costing £5 and another costing £10.

You can also choose from a wooden Cross, Sikh Khanda, Hindu Aum, Secular Tribute, Star, or Crescent Moon priced at £2.99 per item.

A car poppy will set you back £5.49 per item.

All of the profits from the shop will go towards the Legion’s ongoing work in supporting the Armed Forces community.

The Royal British Legion also has official retail stores at Amazon and eBay.

There will also be poppies available at supermarkets up and down the UK.

Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda, and Aldi will all sell poppies for the Legion.

If you’re not able to financially support the Royal British Legion, you can sign up to the 11/11 Challenge to fundraise for the charity.

You will receive a free fundraising pack to support your poppy appeal.

When you’ve requested the fundraising pack, the Royal British Legion will email you to tell you how you can help support the appeal.

What is Remembrance Day?

Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in the UK and Commonwealth members states since the end of the First World War.

Hostilities from the war formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” in 1918.

The First World War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.
