What the Heck Is This Viral #BroomChallenge, and Why Is It All Over Instagram?

02/12/2020

As a millennial, I have seen many a internet challenge in my day. Sure, I may only be 24, but ENOUGH. The Mannequin Challenge was all fun and games, the Tide Pod Challenge was a cry for help, and the recent Dolly Parton Challenge was an interesting way to show people the many sides of ourselves. But I can’t keep up!

And now, we have (*DJ Khaled voice*) anotha one. Introducing the #BroomChallenge, which you might have seen all over your Instagram and Twitter feeds yesterday—aka the day you were catching up on what you missed at the Oscars—because it went viral. People started standing up their brooms, and the rest was history.

Confused about why people are standing their broomsticks up at a 90 degree angle? Care to learn what NASA (yes, really) has to do with this challenge? Want to know how you can get in on the fun? Fear not my friend, allow me to break it down for you in plain English.

So, uh…what is the #BroomChallenge?

The #BroomChallenge is relatively simple. All you gotta do to participate in this challenge is take your nearest broomstick—a Swiffer Sweeper™ will NOT work, JSYK—and balance it until it stands up completely straight in the air. Simple!

Why is the #BroomChallenge a thing?

The #BroomChallenge first began circulating around social media back in 2012, when people on Twitter falsely claimed that NASA said broomsticks will be able to stand up on February 10 because of the Earth’s gravitational pull on that day. Obviously that’s fake news, but people loved buying into hype.

Ok Twitter today is only day your broom will stand on its own according to NASA. Post your broom pics. 🧹 #broomchallenge pic.twitter.com/1HzN5VGxSR

Okay so NASA said today was the only day a broom can stand up on its own because of the gravitational pull…I didn’t believe it at first but OMG! 😭😭😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/M0HCeemyGt

Are my favorite celebrities doing the #BroomChallenge?

Oh absolutely. Ray J joined in on the fun, Ally Brooke joined in, DJ Khaled joined in, Jason Derulo joined in…everyone’s doing it!
