What Quarantine Taught James Van Der Beek About Parenting

09/10/2020

A teachable time. James Van Der Beek sat down with Moms Like Us host Christina Garibaldi and Stroller in the City’s Brianne Manz to share what he’s learned about parenthood during the quarantine. Watch the latest episode of Moms Like Us above to see what the Dawson’s Creek alum, 44, had to say.

Celeb Parents Ring in Kids’ Birthdays in Quarantine

The dad of Olivia, 9, Joshua, 8, Annabel, 6, Emilia, 4, and Gwendolyn, 2, says that quarantine amid the COVID-19 pandemic made him take a look at parenting and his life decisions. He also now asks himself: “What’s really important?”

“Just really learning to prioritize. I think we’ve all come to this realization that we were all so busy before with stuff that didn’t really serve us and didn’t necessarily make us happy,” he exclusively told Us while celebrating Criminal Minds’ 15th anniversary. “So now it’s like, ‘What am I building my life around?’  [I realized] so many of the things that I entertained doing were either based in some outdated idea of what I thought would be important to make me happy or somebody else’s hope or dream or expectation.”

The actor also questioned how present he was for his five children, whom he shares with wife Kimberly Van Der Beek.

“It’s just been a real lesson in being present and recognizing how much more I need to be present, with my kids and family, and what’s really important. I’ve been paying a lot more attention to what I consume in terms of food, media, stories, entertainment,” he added. “Does it enrich me? Does it make me happy? Does it give me an energy? And how do I feel afterwards?”
