What it’s really like to be a Hooters Girl – including wearing the uniforms

Hooters opened its first restaurant in 1983.

The American diner, which is located in Clearwater, Florida, hired attractive women to entice customers through its doors.

These ladies, often referred to as “Hooters Girls”, dress in white tank tops, nylon orange hot pants and pantyhose.

And as the Hooters concept took off in the USA, it eventually made its way across the pond.

In Nottingham City Centre, Hooters opened 21 years ago.

The launch was a success and further outlets opened in Cardiff and Bristol.

These ventures didn’t prove to be as fruitful – as feminist campaigners shared their dislike for the restaurant chain and its “Hooters Girl” hiring policy.

Now, a single Hooters diner remains in the UK.

The Nottingham eatery continues to hire good looking women who dress up in figure-flaunting uniforms.

So these female employees feel about their jobs?

Nottinghamshire Live caught up with some of the waitresses to find out.

Many women who work at Hooters do so as a stepping stone.

And according to 23-year-old waitress Cheila Almeida, it’s a good way to get on the career ladder.

The Nottingham Trent University graduate has worked in the restaurant for five years.

Wearing the uniforms was a little daunting for her at first, but she soon realised there’s nothing too revealing about them.

Chelia said:"When I first tried it on I remember thinking I hope I don't look a bit, 'ooh', but I'm comfortable.

“I’m a woman, I can do what I want and choose to wear what I want."

Chelia says her job at the restaurant provided her with valuable skills and opportunities.

Last June, she travelled to Lake Tahoe in America to compete in a Hooter’s pageant.

She assembled alongside 400 waitresses from across the globe and found the experience to be very “empowering”.

The graduate explained: "We took part in women empowerment classes and had workshops, like how to write a CV, and life after Hooters I came back with a different outlook.”

Chelia hopes to use what she’s learnt as she embarks on a career in real estate.

And she’s not the only Nottingham-based Hooters Girl with impressive ambitions.

Morgan Jones, 20, is working in the restaurant as she studies her biomedical science degree.

The Nottingham Trend University student is able to earn a reasonable wage from the job – and she aims to get a PhD in the future.

Morgan added: "I have worked in other restaurants and it is no different…

 “It's a family restaurant.

“The people who have a bad word to say are usually the one's who have never been in before."
