The gym is meant to be a safe place where people can work out without bother.

Sadly for these women, they have had to deal with people unfairly criticising them for what they choose to wear.

Read on to find out about these gym-goers who had to defend their gym attire when being confronted by staff and patrons.

And some were even forced to leave the venue entirely.

    Ordered to leave

Julia Maren is a fitness fan who blasted the "double standards and sexism" women face at the gym after she was confronted about her workout outfit.

The gym bunny was then told that she would have to leave if she refused to put a shirt on.

She wrote: "Today I was told I’d have to leave the gym if I didn’t put a shirt on with no explanation.

"My workout was interrupted and I was told to take out my headphones for someone to tell me they could “get me a shirt if I need one” and that if I wanted to continue my workout I had to put one on…. WHAT?!

"So you’re telling me that because three inches of my waist is exposed that I’m not welcome in the gym but meanwhile f****** Chad is over there with a cutout that shows his whole nipple?

"Got it. Thank you for taking time out of your day to let me know that double standards and sexism still exists.

"When will we stop policing women’s bodies and HOLD THE OTHER’S ACCOUNTABLE FOR SEXUALIZING THEM!"

    Battle of the gym Karen

Fitness influencer Janelle Clarke sparked a debate on social media after she claimed a "gym Karen" told her to cover up her sports bra while working out.

In the now-viral clip, she was seen doing some cardio in a grey sports bra, while sipping from a pink water bottle.

Over the top of the video, she wrote: "To the lady in the gym who told me ‘you should cover up.’”

Then she branded her a "#GymKaren" in the caption.

While the majority of commenters supported Janelle for calling her out, others agreed that what she was wearing was inappropriate.

    Told to "cover up"

A woman was mortified after being told to cover up while working out at Planet Fitness and said she will have to "find a new gym".

In a video uploaded to TikTok, user Alana @pennevodkaplease showed a screenshot of what she was wearing at the time, which was a simple red t-shirt and black leggings.

While Planet Fitness does have a dress code – which is viewable on their website – it doesn’t seem Alana was in breach of it.

A Planet Fitness spokesperson previously told Daily Star: "We sincerely apologise for the unfortunate incident that took place at our Fairfield, NJ location.

"In this instance, a staff member enforced a company dress code policy in error.

"We are working closely with the local franchise owner to reeducate our staff on current policies.

"We have also contacted this member directly to personally apologise and look forward to welcoming her back into our clubs."

    Made others “uncomfortable”

Kerry Rose Shwartz was fuming after being told her 'inappropriate' gym outfit 'made people uncomfortable' as she didn't believe she was breaking the dress code with her activewear.

In the video she uploaded online she said: "I've struggled with body dysmorphia and feeling comfortable in gyms my entire life.

"When I found a gym that I felt comfortable in and that I really enjoyed, it changed my life … something really disappointing happened to me at the last gym I was going to.

"They actually said something to me that made me feel so uncomfortable that I never wanted to go back there again."

Kerry, who was working out in the typical gym outfit of leggings and a sports bra, claims she was told her outfit was "making a few women feel uncomfortable".

The TikTok user insisted she "wasn't wearing anything inappropriate" but the owner had received a few complaints from people who said her attire was "distracting" and "offensive".

She added: "My initial reaction is confusion and shock and then it was more of like embarrassment. I almost felt like shame even though I shouldn't."
