  • Waitrose now selling a pea-based milk alternative called Sproud, costing £1.90
  • Made from yellow peas grown in southern Sweden which are high in protein
  • Good for the environment as they need very little water and small area to grow
  • Has two times amount of protein of oat and five times amount as almond milk

Waitrose is now selling a trendy alternative to milk made from peas, in order to meet consumer demand for dairy-free alternatives.

Sproud is made using yellow peas, grown in southern Sweden, which are rich in protein and contain important amino acids.

The product has two times the amount of protein of oat milk and five times the protein of almond milk.

However, customers who buy the Sproud Original drink face forking out almost double the price of the average litre, with a carton costing £1.90.

But the brand claims the shelf life of 365 days makes it a sustainable alternative to dairy, because it doesn’t require chilling and cuts down on the waste that comes with throwing away sour milk.

Waitrose have launched the dairy-free alternative in stores and online, with Sproud Original costing £1.90 and Sproud Barista priced at £1.80

With the demand ever-increasing for dairy free and plant based milk alternatives, retailers are eager to capture a share of the market.

Sales of the dairy alternatives category have seen a 16% increase year on year for the retailer, driven by nut milks.

Meanwhile searches on Waitrose.com for popular alternatives such as oat milk are up 68% and kefir up 31% compared to last year.

The pea-based milk alternative is believed to have two times amount of protein of oat and five times amount as almond milk. It comes in two versions, Sproud Original and Sproud Barista

Sproud Original Drink is low in fat and sugar and has two times the amount of protein of oat milk and five times the protein of almond milk.

Meanwhile Sproud Barista has the same taste as the original, but foams and froths easily, making it perfect for coffee and other hot beverages.

Sproud is the first of it’s kind to be made from the yellow peas, which are grown in southern Sweden.

As well as being rich in protein and containing important amino acids, the peas are very efficient to cultivate and harvest.

They need little water – around a third less than soy and ten times less than almonds – and only a small area to grow.

The team say it closely resembled traditional fresh milk without an other ‘green’ aftertaste.

It comes weeks after the retailer announced they would replace black ready-meal trays with recycled alternatives.

The supermarket expects the decision will remove 500 tons of plastic from the waste system every year.
