Vaccine-ready fashion? Stars show skin in cutout sleeves

As more Americans become eligible for the coronavirus vaccine, are stars moving the needle on a jab-friendly fashion trend?

Following Dolly Parton’s lead, many celebrities have been giving a warm embrace to cold-shoulder tops and other strategically skin-baring styles.

In March, the 75-year-old “Jolene” (or is it “Vaccine?”) singer inspired fans with her “perfect vaccine outfit,” a sparkly top with cut-out shoulders that didn’t require her to roll up her sleeves.

But Parton – who famously donated $1 million in funding for Moderna’s vaccine – isn’t alone in calling the shots on the convenient clothing’s resurgence.

Hilary Clinton called for the style to return following Parton’s jab, writing on Instagram, “Loved seeing @dollyparton bring back the cold shoulder as a vaccination look. Shall we make this a trend?”

She shared a throwback photo of herself in a black bare-shouldered dress by Donna Karen for one of her first White House events as First Lady in 1993, a look she’s said was “controversial” at the time.

Since appearing on Donna Karen’s runways in the ‘90s, the cold-shoulder style has filtered in and out of fashion, having been spotted on everyone from Kate Middleton to Kim Kardashian — but seemed to fade out of favor in the mid-2010s.

Now, Parton fans are ready to revive the look. “There’s definately [sic] been a Dolly effect with the cold shoulder tops at the centre I work at,” one tweeted, while another added, “Cold Shoulder tops should now be referred to exclusively as vaccination tops.”

Supermodel Christie Brinkley is already on board, as she paired her own cutout top with bright blue sweatpants for her second vaccine dose in March.

Rather than looking for one of the once-trendy tops in the back of her closet, Amy Schumer took matters into her own hands for her vaccination appointment this week, ripping a hole in her “fanciest dress” for the occasion.

And while the style seems ideal for inoculation, stars aren’t the only ones giving the trend a shot.

Cutout-filled fashion — decidedly sturdier than the seam-splitting trend — is popping up everywhere from red carpets to magazine covers this spring.

Prada’s cutout turtleneck top ($1,150), which features several round holes dotting the sleeves, has quickly become a celebrity favorite. Anya Taylor-Joy covered Vanity Fair’s April 2021 issue sporting an orange version, with its sizable cutouts angled towards the camera.

She’s not the only star flashing flesh in the designer style, either; Este Haim picked the periwinkle version for the 2021 Grammys red carpet, while Jessica Simpson donned it in black to promote her memoir’s new paperback edition.

After all, why stop at just a cold shoulder when you could sport a slew of cool cutouts?

Jennifer Lopez showed off a hole new take on the trend while promoting her DSW shoe collection last week, showing some skin in a mesh-like jacket and pants from Maison Margiela.

And retailers are following suit, with mixed results; a TikToker recently called out Revolve for creating a “vaccine ready” section on its site, stocked with tops ranging from $70 to $300.

One thing’s for sure: With warmer weather and more vaccine appointments on the horizon, cold-shouldered tops will likely have their work cut out for them.
