This Thai national park will post garbage back to litterbugs

They say mistakes can come back to haunt you, but staff at this popular Thai park have taken that pretty literally when it comes to litterbugs.

The team at Khao Yai National Park, roughly two hours away from UK tourist destination Bangcock, have taken to mailing people’s litter back to them.

On top of that, they’ll also register the details of any offenders with the local police.

The new scheme was announced by the Thai government’s environment minister, with Varawut Silpa-archa sharing a picture on Facebook of a pile of garbage all set to be mailed.

The caption for the photo reads: ‘Your trash – we’ll send it back to you.’

In the photo is also a note which translates to: ‘You forgot these things at Khao Yai National Park.’

The mailing of the litter is made possible by the fact that visitors to the park now have to leave their name and addresses with staff on account of coronavirus.

Not only is litter bad for the environment and a blight to the landscape, but it can harm local wildlife too as it’s not uncommon for animals to confuse garbage with food or entangle themselves in it.

Thailand has some pretty serious anti-littering laws to combat this, with hefty fines for offenders varying depending on where you litter.

You can even be handed a one-year prison sentence if you smoke or litter on one of the country’s 24 most popular tourist beaches.
