One of the world’s oldest whisky distilleries is reaching deep into its archives for a special release created in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Glen Grant Devotion is an ultra-rare 70-year-old single malt whisky that’s going up for auction this week at Sotheby’s. Created by Glen Grant Master Distiller Dennis Malcolm, the scotch whisky is the oldest-ever release from the distillery in its 180 years of existence.

Sourced from a single French oak butt seasoned with oloroso sherry, and filled in 1953 at The Glen Grant distillery in Scotland, ‘Devotion’ achieves a rich and elegant chestnut hue with beautiful clarity thanks to the aging process. The one-of-a-kind liquid, meantime, offers intense notes of barley sugar and ripe peach on the palate, balanced by delicate florals, dry spice, raisins and a hint of oak. The whisky maintains its character throughout, offering a unique and sophisticated tasting experience that’s meant to mirror the Queen’s storied legacy and The Glen Grant’s long-held pursuit of excellence.

The new release is bottled in a custom-made, hand-blown decanter, that pays homage to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Striking and architectural, each bottle features a silver capsule with floral engraving inspired by the Queen’s favorite flower, the Lily of the Valley, and the thistle, Scotland’s “National Flower.” The bottle is housed in a wood sculpture that Glen Grant says was handcrafted from fallen elm trees discovered within the distillery gardens. The result: a true objet for discerning whisky connoisseurs and art collectors alike.

Sotheby’s says the bottle is expected to fetch up to $130,000 at the auction, which ends September 22. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Royal Scottish Forestry Society, of which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the Patron.

While Devotion is a super limited-edition release, fans of The Glen Grant can also pick up the brand’s more widely-distributed 21-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which is available for just over $400 on right now.

Aged for a minimum of 21 years in ex-oloroso sherry and bourbon barrels, the Glen Grant 21-Year-Old offers aromas of ripe peaches, toffee and raisins to start, before opening up to a palate of tropical fruits and coconut. A creamy, slightly oily mouthfeel extends to a long finish that the brand says evokes notes of “caramelied crème brûlée.”

Released this past March, this expression comes housed in a beautiful box that’s perfect for gifting or display. Find it online at
