The Tragic Reason Why Nick Jonas Was Afraid His Brothers Would Exile Him Forever

06/13/2019

Pop-rock icons The Jonas Brothers reigned over teenage fans for more than a decade. Nick, Kevin, and Joe Jonas rose to fame as pop-rock superstars with the help of legions of fans and The Disney Channel. But, as they got bigger so did the obstacles they had to overcome.

In 2013 the famed Jonas Brothers musical group broke up, in part due to encouragement by Nick Jonas himself. Tragically, Nick believed his brothers might be mad at him forever for the decision to break up the group.

Tough conversations for necessary results

Nick Jonas has been pretty open about why he thought the group should split up. He tells CBS that there were bunches of balls in play which made the decision for him. These included the fact that the brothers didn’t really have a relationship outside of their music anymore. They had, after all, been performing as a group since Nick was only 12 years old.

“To call it creative differences is almost too simple,” he simplified the situation for reporters. “And I think a lot of people lost the appetite for what we were putting into the world. So, you know, we were putting up shows that weren’t selling. We were making music that I don’t think we were all super-proud of, and it wasn’t connected.”

The conversation was a difficult one, and not a super popular idea at first. The road to their reconnection has been hard as well. They’ve had to spend time talking it out with therapists and work toward becoming close again as a family.

A new project, a Jonas Brothers documentary

When they split up their group fans worried we might not see as much of the brothers publically any longer, which is why there has been much fan rejoicing at the news of their new documentary. Chasing Happiness started streaming on Amazon Prime Video, June 4th.

In the documentary, we get a clear picture of how the split happened. Kevin explains how Nick sat them down and just bluntly announced that he believes they should stop their band.

“Me and Joe sit down,” Kevin shares with viewers, “and Nick says, ‘As you guys know, things haven’t been the same, and the Jonas Brothers should be no more.’”

Joe and Kevin were shocked because they felt like Nick simply wanted to go and do things without his brothers. It was a harsh reality to believe that Nick had already made up his mind without discussing it with them first.

The brothers react to their split

Joe explains in the documentary that he, “…felt betrayed, I felt lied to, I felt angry, numb. What hurt the most was that it came from Nick because he is my best friend. I thought that me, Kevin and Nick were going to do this forever and that it was us against the world.”

That is also when Kevin realized the band was truly over because Joe and Nick were such good friends he could tell that this split was the real deal.

In an interview with Tracy Smith for “CBS Sunday Morning” which aired on June 2nd,  the brothers share how they thought they would never perform together again.

“I checked out in my mind that, that was it; there’s going to be no more brothers, ever,” Joe Jonas told Smith. That was a hard truth for him to handle. He recalls feeling betrayed and hurt by the prospect of going their separate ways.

Nick wanted to protect their family relationship, but in pushing the split worried that his brothers would be angry with him forever. Rightly so, because the decision to split up the group was a difficult and life-changing one. He worried that the tension of the split might become a deep rooted problem, or that his brothers might reject him forever.

Luckily, that isn’t the case.

The Jonas Brothers are closer than ever

The Jonas Brothers have officially reunited and released their single “Sucker” in March. Their fans are really thrilled which is evidenced by the hoards of people watching the music video for the song. It has more than 150 million views on YouTube. The video features the wives of all three band members, who naturally, are really close too. The girls even refer to themselves as “The Jonas Sisters”.

The band is on tour for the rest of this year in the US and head to Europe in 2020.
