From dealing with demanding bosses to knowing how to make yourself heard in a room full of domineering colleagues, it can be difficult to know how to navigate the between the different personalities you come across. 

British author Terry Blackburn believes the key is to understand that almost everyone falls into one of four personality ‘types’: lions, vultures, hyenas and sloths.

Just like their namesakes, each of the office animals have distinct strengths and weaknesses that come into play. 

Lions, for example, are proactive and natural leaders; ‘moody’ hyenas might struggle to hide their true feelings; vultures like to ‘take control’ and sloths prefer to stay out of office politics. 

Blackburn believes the key is to becoming ‘more lion’ and embracing the assertive self-confidence of the king of the jungle.

In his new book Be A Lion, he explains how to change the way you think to develop an unstoppable mindset to succeed in both your professional and personal life.

Mostly Cs: HYENA

Hyenas are perceived negatively by their colleagues. 

They always laugh and make fun of people, and come across as negative, mood-hoovers.

There are always hyenas in every office. 

They will constantly put other people down and are negative about their ambitions. 

They are sly, manipulative and untrustworthy. No matter what you do, achieve, or say, they will have a smart answer as to why you’re wrong or doing the wrong thing.

Hyenas will regularly lie and manipulate people. Change your reputation by supporting your colleagues with their ambitions and focusing on building people up.

Mostly Ds: VULTURE

A vulture hates to work. They will stay in the shadows until opportunities arise for them to swoop in and take control.

Vultures mostly stay in the background, but they are quick to take credit for other people’s ideas. 

Like hyenas, vultures need to work on being more supportive of other people in the office. 

Try to bring your own ideas to any meetings and bring positive energy to your office relationships.

Have zero self-doubt 

Terry said: ‘Lions are the kings of the jungle. They are the dominant animals in many locations and habitats – they live the life they want on their own terms. 

‘They don’t have any self-doubt, any worries or issues. They just dominate their lives and do whatever they want whenever they want.’

‘Lions don’t limit themselves as to what they can achieve. If they want something – a gazelle, a zebra, a wildebeest – they just go after it.’ 

Have clear goals 

He said: ‘Having dreams and clear goals about what you want to achieve in life. Think big. Nothing is impossible.’ 

Surrounding yourself with your pride

Terry revealed other ‘like-minded people who share your ambitions and goals’ are important to have around. 

He said: ‘If in business, employ a great team which supports your mission. If you want to get fit, hire a personal trainer etc.’

Manage your time strictly

He explained: ‘Write down all the activities you want to do and block out time in your diary to do them.’ 

Terry does this in 15 minute blocks and writes down everything from business appointments to time at the gym.

Having a daily writing ritual 

Terry advises writing down your mantra (the things that you are and that you want to be).

Practise gratitude, state your goals and what you want to achieve and he also suggests writing affirmation cards and and saying them out loud in the mirror.
