This week was meant to see celebrities flock to the South of France to the beautiful town of Cannes for the 73rd Cannes Film Festival.

Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the physical event was cancelled.

The annual event is held to preview new films and documentaries from around the world.

We’ve seen the likes of Princess Diana to Rihanna walk down the famous red carpet in all their finest attire.

Even though the dress code is always smart, there have definitely been some very dramatic, eye catching outfits – which will never be forgotten.

So to commemorate what would have been the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, we’ve take a look back at our favourite memorable looks.

Deepika Padukone

It can’t be denied that Indian actress Deepika knows how to own the red carpet when it comes to memorable and dramatic gowns at Cannes.

Last year she pulled out the big guns for the premiere of Rocketman by wearing a gorgeous Dundas white dress with a dramatic train which seemed to go on for miles.

The outfit was adorned with an oversized bow, just in case it wasn’t dramatic enough.

Doesn’t she look amazing though!

Deepika Padukone

But this wasn’t a one off from Deepika. In 2018, the star stepped out in a fuchsia pink, pleated ruffle gown by Ashi Studio.

The oversized, layered ruffles and the brightly coloured tulle left our jaws on the floor for all the right reasons.

Irina Shayk

Model Irina gave us all a masterclass in how to work the red carpet when she strutted down in this daring Versace dress last year.

The combination of the red and gold gives this outfit such a high class lift.

One of our favourite details about this dress is the chains connecting each panel.

Whilst showing off her body, she is a professional at keeping her modesty in tact.

Dua Lipa

For her first Cannes Film Festival in 2019, Dua made sure she dressed to impress.

Wearing a vivid red, Valentino Haute Couture feathered gown, the young singer captured our attention and our hearts.

This dress is incredible.

Kendall Jenner

Showcasing a dress from H&M’s collaboration with designer Giambattista Valli, the model gave everyone instant style envy.

Kendall embraced her youthful side with this fun, layered tulle dress with a waist bow to cinch in and show off her tiny waist.

Dame Helen Mirren

In 2019, Dame Helen wowed us in this gold Elie Saab gown.

Despite the dress not being as extravagant as others, she stole the show with her change of hair colour that made her stand out against the rest.

She’s portrayed quite a few royals during her acting career and stepping out on to the red carpet at Cannes, she didn’t let her crown slip.

Elle Fanning

Waltzing out of the fashion archives, Elle channelled Dior’s 1947 New Look with a head-to-toe classic look.

Wearing Christian Dior, the young actress looked every inch sophisticated and elegant.

We’re in love with the diamanté cuffs.

Sara Sampaio

At the 2019 festival, Victoria’s Secret Angel, Sara Sampaio wore a full mirrored sequin suit by designer Rami Kadi.

Attending the Rocketman premiere, she channelled her inner Elton John and made sure she stood out from the crowd.

This futuristic look is definitely one to remember for it’s blinding quality to reflect the paparazzi’s flashes.

Aishwarya Rai

Another memorable moment from 2018 was when actress Aishwarya strutted down the carpet in a stunning, artistic dress by designer Michael Cinco.

The heavily embellished dress allowed her to exude her elegance in such an effortless way, with her slicked back hair and subtle make up.

Aishwarya Rai

Showing us she is the queen of red carpet glamour Aishwarya Rai impressed again back in 2017.

Wearing another dress by Michael Cinco, she proved that Cinderella will go to the ball, and look like perfection whilst doing it.

The oversized, princess style dress complimented her skin tone beautifully.

Bella Hadid

Back in 2017, Bella floated down the carpet at the amfAF Gala Cannes in a full nude illusion, crystal embellished dress.

This grecian goddess inspired dress was by Ralph & Russo Haute Couture and it shows off the model’s stunning body in an elegant way.

Cheryl

In 2015, Cheryl attended the Cannes Film Festival is this stunning silk gown by Ralph & Russo.

With an elegant thigh high split and high neckline, she oozed glamour.

Eva Longoria

This Marchesa gown that actress, Eva Longoria, wore to the 2012 opening ceremony and Moonrise Kingdom premiere will always be one of the most memorable dresses to walk the carpet.

Not only does the crystal embellishment showcase her curves with the nude illusion underneath.

But the dramatic long train left us then and still leaves us now, completely obsessed with this look.

Princess Diana

At the 1987 festival, royalty was in attendance as the carpet was graced by the presence of Princess Diana.

Gliding along the carpet in a flowing chiffon blue ballgown, she accessorised with matching topaz jewels that left us falling more in love with her.
